Title: Printing from RootsMagic
Post by: Stirrick on Thursday 01 October 20 12:11 BST (UK)
My apologies if this has been asked before.
It seems such a simple thing to do that I think I must be missing something obvious.

I'm a new user to RootsMagic.

Looks great, but the print facility has got me baffled.
I have a chart which is 25cm x 10cm.
I had no control over the size of that chart, it's simply what I was given when I generated it.
I want to print it as a single A3 sheet.
In other words, scale it from 25cm x 10cm to A3.

How do I do it ???

Is this a pedigree Chart?

Once you have selected the start person, number of generations etc.,
click on Layout button on the right of the pedigree chart screen (before hitting generate report)

You can then select page size, print size, orientation, margins etc.,

Generate the report and see how many pages it goes over and tweak. (fit page width button etc.,)

It's so long ago since I printed a report with RM but I seem to remember you used to be able export to excel (. csv file) and tweak but that seems to have disappeared in RM4 and 7 or I can't find it anymore. :-\

Thanks for the reply

It's actually a Wall Chart (in RM7) and there is no 'Layout' button.

I suppose it would be possible to limit the size via the 'Font' and 'Space' settings for the individual elements of the Chart, but that's a lot of messing around every time you prepare something new. And it seems far more logical to just scale the whole thing so that it fits the page you want to print to.

I've seen a couple of posts on-line where they suggest printing to a PDF and then scaling that. But that seems crazy. Surely there's an option within RM for something so basic ?

Once you have generated your Wall chart
go layout > Canvas size > enter the size you want
go to print
on the main tab
Select properties> select A3

Select the page layout tab
make sure the Reduce/Enlarge document  is checked
and the by output paper size is checked A3

Select Advanced to check/uncheck boarders to your preference

ok out and print

you can also export to .Jpeg  file then adjust print size in a photo editing application

Fabulous - you are an absolute star.

The Export to jpg option worked great.
Which is really the easy work-around that I was after.

There doesn't seem to be any way to print a single sheet directly from RM.
From your directions, when I adjust the canvas size, it just adjusts the background page. Not what's on it. And the background page is what gets printed.

There's a Page Setup Tab, I presume that's what you mean ?
But no 'Reduce/Enlarge' option.
So RM just sends the Chart, subdivided into the number of A3 pages, to the printer with no adjustment.

This is a deficiency in RM. But since they're really pushing their in-house oversize printing facilities, I wonder if it's deliberate ?

Thanks very much for your help.

You’re welcome Andy

I did experiment years ago with printing but my tree is very large and it took forever to tweak and I was never satisfied with the results. Back then there was the export to .csv file which opens in excel which is much easier to handle and I am more comfortable with excel but that has disappeared.
