GOURLAY ANN JOHN GOURLAY/JANNET YOUNG 23/08/1824 Kirkpatrick Fleming
I note the record for Ann above on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but no Mary around 1811
MARGARET is the nearest to the year 16/09/1812 and there a five others in between.
There are only two marriages in the County on SP .
GOURLEY JAMES MARION DICKSON 14/02/1845 Annan
GOURLEY MARY GEORGE BELL 22/10/1829 Graitney or Gretna
No marriage in Scotland for John & Janet but possible birth John below, 8 in the County for Janet.

It looks like the marriage in 1829 may be correct. Only child?
BELL JOHN GEORGE BELL/MARY GOURLIE 14/11/1832 Middlebie
Also the marriage of Margaret in 1841 -
on the 1851 census born Kirkpatrick Fleming, with William and three children born 1843 – 1848
Plus later.
RULE ROBERT WILLIAM RULE/MARGARET GOURLEY 02/02/1853 Annan
RULE GEORGE WILLIAM RULE/MARGARET GORLEY 24/03/1851 Annan
No trace of Ann unless the one on the 1841 census should read 17 but unlikely as the SP transcript is the same.

1851 census has 3 grand daughters living with John and Jannet Gorley.
Margaret Irving (11months), birth on SP 6/4/1850 Kirkpatrick Fleming, f-Christopher Irving, m-Jane Gourly.
Elizabeth Black (6)
Jannet Thomson (7)
Have not found a birth for Elizabeth or Jannet but would assume their mother/s would be daughters of John and Jannet.
There are a few Gorley/Gourley/Gourlay headstones at Kirkpatrick Fleming Churchyard on Find A Grave.

Hello Colc
Thank you very much for the information you very kindly sent me! The 1851 census is this the one you can hardly read. I think this is what it reads:-
William Rule (Head) 34 head occupation something and handloom weaver (married) born Annan
Margaret Rule 20 born Kirkpatrick Fleming
I think it reads William (Son) 1 born Annan
Agnes (Daughter) born Annan 6 and Jannet (Daughter) born Annan 3
Cannot read were they lived at.

Good Afternoon hmcc
Elizabeth and Jannet are the daughters of John and Jannet (nee Young) Gourlay.
I don't think Janet was married to Christopher Irving but they went to Australia. All that I know is that Jannet died in 1918 in South Australia. I also have to find what happened to Jean Gourlay born abt 1824 in Kirpatrick Fleming and Agnes born 1813 in Kirkpatrick Fleming parents also John and Jannet Gourlay

Hello Colc
The 1851 census is this the one you can hardly read.
The census is an Ancestry transcript.
Downies Wynd, Annan.
William Rule 34
Margaret Rule 34
William Rule 8
Agnes Rule 6
Jannet Rule 3
This seems to agree with the SP Transcripts.

Hi,
1851 Census Broats Moor, Kirkpatrick Fleming
John Gorley, head (64) handloom weaver.
Jannet Gorley, wife (67)
Agness Gorley, daughter (34)
John Gorley, son (32)
Jannet Gorley, daughter (30)
Jean Gorley, daughter (27)
Elizabeth Black, grand daughter (6)
Jannet Thomson, grand daughter (7)
Margaret Irving, grand daughter (11months)
All born Kirkpatrick Fleming.
In my last post referring to Margaret Irving as a daughter of Jane Gorley and Christopher Irving, Jane would possibly be Jean as above in 1851 census and not Jannet. Jean Scottish version of Jane.

Dear All
William Rule and Margaret Gourley (Gorley) married 16 July 1841 in the parish or Annan. Their children are William born 1843, Agnes born 1845, Jannet born 1848. These children are on the 1841 census then later they have Robert Rule born 2 February 1853 in Annan and George born March 1851 again in Annan, Dumfriesshire.
I found William (Senior) Rule had died in Sept 1867 in West Derby, Lancashire aged 51 years.
But in the 1861 census in Scotland William Rule is married (cannot find a marriage) to Rebecca Stewart Gordon aged 39 born in Kirkcudbrightshire. She died in S C Asylum about 1891 and is buried in Dumfries.
William and Rebecca Rule had a son called Martin Smith Rule born 12 December 1856 and a Daughter called Ann Rule born about 1860, both born in Annan.
But what happened to Margaret Rule nee Gourlay??? She must have died?? Can anyone help me to find her death??
Regards

A marriage for William Rule and Rebecca Gordon on 27th November 1854 at Annan on SP.
His first wife Margaret must have died between February 1853 and November 1854 but can't find a death on SP for her.

If Margaret died in Annan no church burials listed there on SP unfortunately. You could see if there is any mention in the Kirk Session Records.

Dear All
Thank you very, very much for the information youhave all very kindly sent, but I think these Gourlay's are getting complicated.
When I first put on the tab I was looking for Mary and Ann. I think I have jumped with different information which I have been given.
At present Margaret Gourlay (Gorley)'s parents are Samuel gourlay and Mary Harkness. This is the Margaret that has married William Rule. All the other Gourlay's that everyone has sent me do fit in my family tree. But the problem we have each family keep using the same Christian names from one generation to the next!! They don't make thing easy!!
