Someone has stated on Ancestry as fact that our ancestor is a Joseph Digby - but I think they may have the wrong one and everyone else has copied him cos he looks like he knows what he is talking about! But I am now doubting it is correct.....but there are multiple OTHER Joseph Digbys to choose from and I don't know which is mine and how to prove it. How do I work out which one is mine please? What can I do to rule others categorically out and stop making this a guessing game?
What I have been led to believe: Joseph Digby (born 1673 Wethersfield, died 1722) married Ann Richardson (1675-1701)…and then Mary Trigge (1685-1766). His first wife Ann gave birth to a son and was buried alongside him in 1701. That bit is defo correct. Then he married Mary Trigge in late 1714. They had twins in 1715. (The Ancestry researcher says they married in 1715 and it was a shotgun wedding but the original church record has the marriage as 1714).
Then the researcher has stated that after the twins, Joseph Digby and Mary Trigge later had another son, also called Joseph "at some point after 1715". And they lead us to believe that this Joseph married Sarah Suckling 25 Dec 1759. And that he died 1763 - BUT the Joseph Digby who died in 1763 states in the church record it was an infant, so that can't be correct.
AND I cannot find the birth of ANOTHER Joseph junior to Joseph senior and Mary Trigge ANYWHERE, let alone after 1715, except on some Ancestry trees where it looks like everyone has copied each other.
I know that Joseph and Sarah Suckling were my great x 5 grandparents and the line is provable from there, but I really want to try and document where my great x 5 grandfather was born, and who his parents are/
I have found multiple other possible Joseph Digbys born in the same era within 10 miles....how do I now prove which Joseph is mine please?
What I've found:
1. Joseph Digby b 14 Aug 1732 and baptised 20 Aug 1732, St mary the Virgin, Bocking. Father:James, mother:Sarah
2. Joseph Digby baptised 23 Aug 1724 in St Mary the Virgin, Panfield, Essex Father: Jeremy Mother: Mary
3. Exactly the same as #2 but different date: 22 May 1720? From FindMyPast.
4. Joseph Digby. Baptised 25 or 26 Dec 1731 in Rayne, Essex. Father: Thomas. Mother: Eliz
5. Joseph Digby bap 4 Jun 1704 in Rayne Essex. Mother: Mary. Father: Jospeh
6. Joseph Digby bap 30 Nov 1718 in Shalford. Mother: Mary. Father: Nicholas.
