Title: WW2 uniform identification please
Post by: Jo6100 on Sunday 11 October 20 19:40 BST (UK)
This is my great uncle “Jack” John Brennan. He was born in Dublin in 1901 but lived in London from at least the 1920s. We have this picture of him in uniform: there are no details on the photo other than his name.  His granddaughters are trying to find out what regiment he was in. In the 1939 Register he was living at home as a cook but he seems to have joined up by late 1940/1941.

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated

Many thanks
Jo

Jacket doesn't look right for RAF. Unable to see if the RAF eagle is on the top of the sleeve or the cap buttons to confirm RAF. You can usually see the shirt of someone in the RAF. Looks like epaulettes on the jacket they are not on RAF jackets.

I would say he is army.

Large Badge on his cap I would have thought eliminates the RAF.

Due to his age i think you can rule out being in one of the "teeth" arms (Infantry,Armoured or Artillery) as those generally recruited the younger lads. With the lack of identifying badges it looks like asking the MOD for his papers assuming you know his date of birth, you could be waiting some time though.

Hi, thanks,

I’ve written to his granddaughters and suggested that. I’m 4 months in to the wait for my dad’s records and I suspect it might be several more yet!
