Title: Help with finding a family
Post by: Delphia on Sunday 11 October 20 19:58 BST (UK)
I have a birth certificate for Sarah Maria Dobinson born 8/4/1871.  Registrar's District Bethnal Green, Middlesex.  Father is Charles Dobinson.  Mother is Caroline Dobinson formerly Sprickett.  Father's occupation Button Maker.  X The mark of Caroline Dobinson mother 52 Camden Street, Bethnal Green, informant.

Have been unable to find family on 1871, 1881, 1891 census.

Not found a baptism or death for Sarah Maria, and no marriage between a Charles Dobinson and a Caroline Sprickett.

The birth is on GRO with the MMN of Sprickett.

Can any one find them?

Thanks

Delphia

This must surely be them in disguise in the 1871 census:

52 Camden St, Bethnal Green

Charles Picket Head Mar 24 labourer Bethnal Green
Caroline do Wife Mar 22 Bethnal Green
Do do Daur 1 week Bethnal Green

RG10/495/39/10 (“Picker” on Ancestry).

Having said that, given that the census was taken on 2 April 1871 the baby shouldn’t have been recorded (as not yet born on census date). So: either she was wrongly included when the census form was returned after census day, or she was born earlier than her birth registration records.

What was the date of registration?

Baptism, April 16th  shows birthdate  of 22nd March.
Charles Dobinson is a Metal Melter, 52 Camden Street

Added - child is Sarah Maria as birth registration

Sorry not got back before internet went down.

The birth certificate for Sarah Maria shows the 18th May 1871 for the registration.

Must confess did not think to look for other siblings on GRO.

Where do you have Charles or Caroline before 1871?

It looks like a complicated chronology after 1871.

1874: Caroline marries as “Catherine” Dobinson (dau of Joseph Dobinson) to Thomas Cowell.
1881: Thomas and Carry Cowell have Carry Cowell, 11, in their household.
1891: Thomas and Caroline Cowell again have Caroline Cowell, 21, with them.
1892: The younger Caroline marries, as Sarah Maria Cowell, to William Welfare.
1901 & later: She is recorded by the name of Caroline/Caraline Welfare.

Am I on the right lines?

I think “Caroline” snr was actually born as Catherine Dobinson in 1850, dau of Joseph and Ellen.

1861: RG9/256/82/20

Following up on the likely parents, Joseph and Ellen. Ellen seems to go by a few names Leany, Ellen, Helen and Alney. Their son Francis married Mary Eliza Torbison in 1889 and Leany/Ellen is with them in 1891 at Essex Street, Stepney.

East London Observer
27 Feb 1875
Inquests In Bethnal Green
On Tuesday, Mr Humphreys held inquests at the Prince of Wales Tavern, Bonner-road, Bethnal Green, on the bodies of Joseph Francis Dobinson, aged 64 years; [& others].

In the case of the deceased man Dobinson, it appeared that he was a shoemaker, and resided at 1, Montford-place, Three Colts-lane. He had been unwell for some time past with a sore thumb, which arose from some poisoned leather upon which he had been at work. Up to Thursday last, however, he  seemed to get about as usual, but on that day he was seized with a shivering, and was attended by Dr Mainwaring, but the following morning he expired, and the result of an examination by Dr Mainwaring showed that death was due to natural causes, but accelerated by blood poisoning from the sore thumb. A verdict to that effect was accordingly returned.

27 Feb 1875: Joseph Francis Dobinson; age 64; 3 Colts Lane, Bethnal Green

Sorry not been on but work gets in the way.

Many thanks for all the information given.

Sarah Maria/ Caroline was my great grandmother.  She married as Sarah Maria but as you have found she is otherwise registered as Caroline, Caraline, Carry, Carey, and death certificate is Caroline.

Never found a birth for her, so was living in hope when sent for the birth for Sarah Maria but this then came back as parents Charles Dobinson and Caroline nee Sprickett.  So we are no further forward.

Thanks once again will follow up on the inquest details and other info.
