I’m looking for information on my great, great, great grandfather Joseph Gaunt, born in Staffordshire, married Susannah Long in Stretton on Fosse Warwickshire. Joseph was blind & he & Susannah & his 5 children went to Wawanosh, Huron County Canada. I’d like to be able to prove who Joseph’s parents were.
-
Hello
Where did you find the information about his date and place of birth, please?
Bev

I saw the information in several places eg. Ancestry & Family Search, Geni.com. I know the dates are right because I also have details of his journey to Canada in 1850 with his wife & 5 sons. Joseph was blind & his job in England was a log tapper.

Thank you for that. Yes, that is my Joseph but it is his parents who I’m uncertain about.
There is quite an interesting story about Joseph & Susannah. In 1850 they sailed from Liverpool to Canada & walked over 400Kms to a plot of land given to settlers. It was covered with trees which they cleared & then farmed. When they did the walk, the youngest boy was just 7 & they carried all their belongings with them.

Baptism year 1791
Baptism date 01 Oct 1791
Died Dec. same year.
I can see 3 in Staffs.
1793-Marchington-parents: James & Hannah.
1795-Rocester-parents: Thomas & Anne.
1797-Tatenhill-parents: Joseph & Sarah.
How do you know he was born in Staffs?
-
I saw the information in several places eg. Ancestry & Family Search, Geni.com.
Were they just peoples trees or official documents :-\
-
I have an account of their journey to Canada in 1850 which was documented by someone who descends from the family in Canada & all the names match with the 1841 census in Stretton on Fosse, Warwickshire.
-
But no actual evidence of Joseph's place of birth :-\
-
Nothing official, no, but all the dates match up with him & his family. I have him down as being born in Marchington, Staffs in 1792 son of Hannah Wright & James Gaunt or on Ancestry born to Mary Littleton & John Gaunt. I haven’t a clue which one is right.

I think he is the top one, parents Hannah & James. The other parents i have for him from various sources are John Gaunt & Mary Littleton. I just cannot ascertain which are the right parents & I find that very frustrating.
-
What was the name of Susanna's father
-
Thomas Long, mother Ann Long.
-
Thank you, clearly not following naming patterns for their children then.
-
Seems not.
-
In 1841 he gives his age as 40 so a BY of 1796-1801.
Why do you say he was born in 1792?
-
I have a written record which says that he died in 1864 aged 72.
-
The problem with ages at death is that it's only as good as the person's knowledge
of the deceased.
I wouldn't take as read that he was 72.
Along with the census where he says he was between 40-44 (ages were rounded down in 1841)
really means he could have been born any time in the 1790's which doesn't help at all.
-
Yes, I understand
-
The NBI has just 5 Gaunt's in Marchington.
1797/Elizabeth.
1797/Hannah.
1800/John.
1803/Elizabeth.
1830/James age 68.
No ages for the others.
-
What would bother me is that the marriage was at Stretton on Fosse which is very close to the boundary of Gloucestershire and near to Oxfordshire and Worcestershire so why pick Staffordshire as his place of birth unless there is good evidence to support it.
I know that people did travel a lot, his journey to Canada proves that but I would be wanting more evidence, we have to remember that not all records are online and not all children were baptised.

Edwin was next.
I'm not convinced that Joseph's father would have been an Edwin!
-
Joseph & Susannah’s eldest son was called Edwin. He died in Canada.
On Joseph’s headstone, it says that he originated in Staffordshire
