Title: Emmett
Post by: matanzas on Tuesday 13 October 20 11:05 BST (UK)
I seem to have hit the proverbial brick wall.  I am pretty confident of my research and confirmation up to - Richard Emmett b. 3 May 1647 in Harberton, m. 17 May 1673 to Mary Rowe, d. 15 March 1690.
The best I have for father is Nicholas m. Agnes Hoare 31 March 1643.
I have struggled with usual sources. Does anyone have any ideas or is this it.

That baptism is 30th May 1647,  I would agree that it probably says Richard under the splodges  :).  There is no mothers name on the image.

He appears to have siblings baptised in 1644 & 1646 which would fit that marriage.  There is another Emmett entry in 1640 which I am afraid I can't read

Hi Rosie99
Siblings Nicholas and Ann but they don't supply father or mother details. As I say, brick wall, but glad to have your confirmation about Richard.

The 1640 entry says ---- Base daughter -----Emmett
Agree 1647 entry is Richard
The 1643 marriage in Plymouth is 35+ miles from Harberton.
2 children were baptised to Nicholas in Plymouth in 1645 and 1646 - one wife Agnes, one wife Elizabeth (?) so the dates contradict this being the Nicholas in Harberton.
Nicholas EMMOT of Harberton was buried in Rattery in 1676.

Hi DOB7
Thank you for your help.  Second wife Elizabeth was a surprise.  Where did you find that?
What does base daughter - Emmett mean?
I've not been happy with the Plymouth connection but you could fit the dates in.
Nicholas Emmott is possibly related.  There were quite a few Emmetts living there then.
Regards

The base daughter was an entry for a baptism in Harberton in 1640 - illegible name, base daughter (which means illegitimate) of illegible name EMMETT.
The second wife Elizabeth is the name written in the Plymouth St Andrews register as wife of that Nicholas. 1st child was baptised there to Nicholas & Agnes and 2nd child was recorded as baptised to Nicholas & Elizabeth. The fact that those 2 baptisms in Plymouth were in 1645 and 1646 when 'your' Nicholas was baptising in Harberton in 1644, 1646 and 1647 makes me think that they are 2 different Nicholases.

Thank you for the explanation.  Obvious when someone explains.
Now I feel less optimistic about getting beond Richard.

Actually, I have been researching further and I now am not satisfied about Richard Emmett.  Looking at the photos of the Parish Register 1660 it shows a marriage between Richard Emmett and Marie Rowe. If that this is the same Richard born 1647 that makes him just 13 when he got married.
Roger Emmett born 1683 in Harberton is now my earliest safe record.

What about the Harberton marriage 17 May 1673 for Richard EMMIT and Mary his wife (no surname stated)? They would appear to be the parents of Roger bap 1683. I don't see a marriage in 1660 in Harberton between Richard & Marie ROWE. The 1660 marriage is at Shaugh Prior, some 20 miles away. That Richard & Mary went on to have children in Shaugh Prior in 1663 and 1669.
Can you confirm is it Roger 1683 that you are actually tracing?

Thank you DOB7.  I had satisfactorily established Richard b.1647, m. 1673, d. 1690, married to Mary and was led astray by chasing Nicholas as his father.  Richard and his son Roger are now firm, as firm as they can be.
So I am back to trying to establish a father for Richard.  Thank you for your informed assistance
