Title: Searching for but stuck.
Post by: unknownmale on Saturday 17 October 20 18:15 BST (UK)
Hi folks, brick wall. In the 1911 census For Kilmallie, address Corpach Canal Cottage, was the residence of my wife forebear, Peter Macpherson, his wife and children specifically Margaret aged 14.
We know of three children born to her Moira, John and William. Sometime after the census we believe she moved to the Glasgow area, where she married ? Have searched Scotland`s people but no luck identifying husband or marriage. Any ideas welcome. Thanks.

Do you know when and where Margaret died? A Scottish death certificate will name her husband.
When and where were the three children born, and what was their surname?

If Margaret was 14 in 1911 she will only have married from approx 1917 onwards.  Have you checked SP?

Hi Neale & Carole W.
I have tried S/P. used up quite a few credits trying for pot luck We have no clue to her husband`s surname, so cannot look for death cert. due to that prob. Cannot find a death cert using maiden name plus mother`s maiden name  So stuck. Ta. N.B. Peter the father was a lock keeper and the family would have had to vacate the house upon his death in   1915. S/P note the death in Inverness.

The original 1911 Census states Margaret was b Govan as were her siblings.  The 1901 says Glasgow.  Both say mother was Sarah and Peter a shipwright.

On May 11, 1896 Margaret was born at 82 King St. Govan.  Her mother was Sarah Campbell and they married Dec 30 1890 in Greenock.

So based on her birth year, her mother's maiden name; she died in 1990 Kingussie unless there was another Margaret with a mother named Campbell born the same year.  So you must wait and when the world returns to some sort of normality you can order this death and see if we are right.

Have you tried following her mother or siblings using electoral rolls you might find Margaret with them before she moved

I don't think so.

The Margaret with mother Campbell who died in Kingussie in 1990 aged 93 was Margaret Macpherson, other surname Fletcher.

Margaret Fletcher married Harry Edward B Macpherson in 1943 in Alvie, which is next door to Kingussie. So it looks as if this may not be your Margaret Macpherson.

There's a Duncan Fletcher who married Catherine Campbell in Glenelg in 1892, and a birth of a Margaret Fletcher in Strath (in Skye, just across the sound of Sleat from Glenelg) in 1896.

I speculate that this is the one who died in Kingussie in 1990.

Perhaps work back from the three children, who were possibly born in the 1920s. Looking for their death would give  the fathers name. If they are you family relatives, is there no one in the extended family who remembers their surname?

Further speculation. If Margaret died in 1990 aged 93, it may well be that her daughter Moira has died in the 30 years since then.

There are seven deaths of Moiras with mother Macpherson in the SP index. Two can be discounted because they are too young (born when Margaret Macpherson was 49 or more).

That leaves five.

Moira Macdonald or Dickson, died 2000 aged 72, so born 1927/1928. Moira Macdonald was born in Barrhead and Levern in 1927. Moira Macdonald married John Morrison Dickson in Barrhead and Levern in 1948.

Moira Isabel Millar or Mackenzie, died 2006 aged 75, so born 1930/1931. Moira Isabel Mackenzie was born in Forres in 1930. Moira Isabel Mackenzie married Alexander Millar in Forres in 1958.

Cecilia Moira B Archibald or McKandie, died 2012 aged 81, so born 1930/1931. Cecilia M B McKandie was born in Rothiemay in 1930. Cecilia M B McKandie married Ian Gilbert Archibald in 1956 in Towie.

Moira Kay Gibson or Cleland or Webster or Thomas died 2020 aged 85 so born 1934/1935. Mary Kay R Webster was born in Renfrew in 1934. Mary Kay R Webster married James Watson Cleland in Renfrew in 1954. Moira Kay Reid Cleland married Daniel Thomas in Renfrew in 1997. Moira Kay Reid Thomas or Webster married James Gibson in Renfrew in 2001.

Moira Jack or Sutherland, died 2019 aged 82 so born 1936/1937. Moira Sutherland married Alexander Watt Jack in Duffus in 1959.

It's unlikely that Moira Isabel Millar, Cecilia Moira McKandie of Moira Sutherland are yours, because they are all from Moray/Banff/Aberdeen.

So that leaves Macdonald and Webster.

There are no marriages of a Ma*g* M*cpherson to a Webster between 1911 and 1930, but there are 5 marriages of Ma*g* M*cpherson to a M*cdonald. I think the ones in Rosskeen and Boharm are unlikely, but you might like to take a punt at one or more of the other marriages to see if it's your Margaret. Or maybe one of the surnames might ring a bell?

I suppose that to be thorough I should repeat the exercise using McPherson instead of Macpherson, but not tonight as sleep beckons :) And of course Moira could still be alive, or she might have left Scotland, in which case all of the foregoing is pointless.

Working from Forfarian’s excellent research, and speculation on the name MACDONALD …….

William Forbes MacDonald born 1925 Barrhead, and died in 2007, with mother maiden name MacPherson
Moira MacDonald born 1927 Barrhead, and died 2000, with mother maiden name MacPherson
John Archibald MacDonald died 1990 with mother maiden name MacPherson (born 1929/1930, but name too common to find definite birth)

Therefore possible marriages are:
Margaret Sillar MacPherson married Archibald McDonald in 1923 Anderston (seems the more probable)
Maggie MacPherson married George MacDonald in 1919 Crieff

I could not find similar matches with children and marriage for the name WEBSTER
You could do similar look-ups using other possible surnames Millar, McKandie or Sutherland.

Good work, Neale1961.

Unknownmale, why not look at one or both of those marriages to see if one of them is your Margaret Macpherson?

Trees on Ancestry have Margaret Sillar MacPherson as daughter of Helen Sillars and Donald MacDonald MacPherson, born about 1900 Renfrew.

Added:
scotlandspeople has Margaret Sellar MacPherson, 1899, Renfrew.

You have Margaret's date of birth and maiden name - can you request a search of the Scottish 1939 register to see how many Margaret's are listed, or do you need her surname in 1939?

Is it worth checking out britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk for possible birth/death newspaper announcements?  Don't envy you, trying to locate a specific McDonald in Scotland ::) but still ...

Good luck with your search
