Title: Christmas carols
Post by: radstockjeff on Monday 19 October 20 10:14 BST (UK)
At our church we are looking at having an external Carol sing-song , in the Church grounds on the Saturday afternoon before Christmas. The church is quite near the local shops and we would hope that what we do will give some enjoyment at what is likely to be a pretty bleak time for a lot of folk.
We would have a few singers, safely distanced, a keyboard and someone playing a brass instrument, probably a trombone to give a little bit of oomph! to the sound. It is the latter which is bothering me. Would the use of such a wind instrument be permitted?

I think that is a great idea, at the moment all I know is that the church grounds near to a few shops is having the children's Christingle there on Christmas eve , 3 services to be spread out

Sunday it is torture not to sing hymns when the organ is playing

Don't know about the woodwind instruments though, stick to something hand held !!

I'm so glad I live where I do ;D

Carol services will go ahead as usual.
Few restrictions on everyday life.

If I hear of a broadcast, I'll post on here.

It might look a little silly, but presumably you could put a "mask" on the open end of the trombone?

As long as the trombone player is also suitably distanced, that would seem to resolve most of the potential issues.

I do so agree, louisa maud! I hadn't realised quite how important the singing was to me.
Our vicar has decided to have a small, spread out choir in the chancel of our large church to sing a few things for All Saints Day. I just hope we still have the lung capacity to do it.

Done a bit of research on Bell Masks . Apparently they are in production in the U S of A but I cannot yet find any sources in this country. Still trying. Maybe Mr Amazon may know something.

I can't see any problem with having a trombone played outdoors, with the statutory spacing of course. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has been steaming concerts, with the musicians suitably spaced, from inside the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole since the end of September.

Was it hot in there?  ;D

Mr Amazon certainly does know something,  do a search on Trombone Bell Cover and you'll find them from £7 odd upwards.

EDIT: Ignore this (kinda), as the same product is listed on Amazon, as pointed out by Roobarb.

A quick search turned up MoistureGuard (https://www.moistureguard.co.uk/), based in Yorkshire.

The British Bandsman website has a bit of info (http://www.britishbandsman.com/news/2379/new-bell-covers-hit-the-shelves-as-leading-players-join-aerosol-research) about the product. And someone has a review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID3WEOGNezc) of it on YouTube.

:-*Well when Boris got into his car outside No 10 yesterday,he was wearing a mask but the other person getting into the car with him wasn’t,—-
I know the air is forced out of the instrument but a few feet distance in the fresh air.?
Other players seem able to perform indoors, many announcements of this group and that ensemble playing - presumably socially distanced -are made on Classic FM.
Pretend it is a University trombone! It can pretty well do what it wants then by all accounts .
I hope it all goes well, and yes how cheery at this time and perhaps some of the real meaning of  Christmas will be brought back into it,less commercialism.
Best wishes for  that  and good weather.
Viktoria.

Perhaps if the trombonist plays behind the others, and facing in the opposite direction?..... Might be difficult to keep the performance together, oh dear, back to the drawing board....

Not quite the same but pre record the hymns ,and play them back at the service ?Loudspeaker system?
Hope something is worked out .

Heath Robinson design fantasies a great influence on me when young! Brilliant.

I have ordered calendars with his designs as both sons are very handy , and can repair, fix most things .
A tennis ball from a neighbour’s little boy got  stuck in the hopper head of the downspout, just before we were leaving for a holiday, so I fixed up a drip rope
. as the splashes were wetting they kitchen door and getting in .
The boy’s Dad said he’d fix it ASAP -  was a good all rounder  handyman.
His wife had our keys so all in order when we came back.
But our sniffy next door neighbour wanted to know why I had left that “Heath Robinson  contraption, it was so untidy !”
I told him!
Viktoria.
Just thought H.R, would devise an instrument that would go round corners,
so the expelled air would disperse.
Could it be collected and  purified, ?
What if it was blown through a gauze soaked in disinfectant?
I am not sure there is even a problem.—?
