Title: Evan and Elizabeth James
Post by: philipjuk on Tuesday 20 October 20 10:51 BST (UK)
I’ve come to a dead end looking into what may have happened to my great grandfather and great grandmother and was hoping someone here could help in any way.

My great grandfather – Evan Mathew James was born in Aberystwyth in 1878. He is named in the 1883 census living with his mother, Jane James. I couldn’t find an entry for him in the 1891 census but in 1901 he was living as a boarder in Handsworth, Birmingham. There is no mention of a wife. My grandmother was born in 1904 and according to her birth certificate, her mother is named as Elizabeth James nee Russell. She is living with my great grandfather at 41 Miles Street in Aston. My great grandfather’s occupation is listed as a blacksmith/joinery man.

In the 1911 census, my grandmother is living with her grandmother back in Aberystwyth. There is no mention of Evan or Elizabeth. The only other mention of Evan is in my grandmothers’ marriage certificate where it’s noted he is deceased. His occupation is noted as a Coachsmith.

I cannot find a marriage certificate for Evan and Elizabeth or a death certificate for either. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Yes, I have no record of Jane James ever being married.

My grandmothers name was Doris May James

Then why did you not mention him.  :-\

These extra bits of information often help us to track back or locate other people.  It helps us if you give as much information as you can.  Do you have an address on Doris's birth certificate.

there's an Evan Mathew James of Aberystwyth on this list of volunteers in 1914

It might or might not be relevant, but there's a birth of a Gertrude May James (mmn Russell) in Aberystwyth in Dec qtr 1905.

She seems to have died in the same quarter, and so did an Elizabeth James, aged 30, with the same reference number.

There’s an Evan Matthew James who dies in 1921 registered Pontypridd.

Thank you Arthur’s but she was born in Birmingham.

I know you said that about Doris, but I'm wondering if they moved to Aberystwyth and had another daughter there. (Note that the one I found was Gertrude, not Doris!) If these entries are from your family, it could explain what happened to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth and Gertrude do appear to have been a mother and daughter: the Aberystwyth cemetery database shows that Elizabeth was buried on 22 Oct 1905 and Gertrude on 23 Oct 1905, and both died at 3 Cambrian Court.

The database shows 3 other burials in the same grave: Elizabeth Bonnor (1902), Jospeh (sic - presumably Joseph) James (1917) and Janie James (1947). You can get fuller details of these at

Yes, Arthur. I see where you’re coming from. Joseph died in 1933 but I believe Jane died in 1947. I have no idea who Elizabeth Bonner is.

the address on those burials looks to be a match for where the James family were living for the 1901 census, 3 Cambrian Gardens, Cambrian Place.

The Evan M whose death was registered in 1921 at Pontypridd isn't a match as his initial M was for Morgan. Evan Morgan James aged 43 was buried 19 March 1921 in Abercynon, address 17 Gertrude Street.

Thank you ArthurK - I now have Elizabeth and Gertrude's death certificates. This is my great grandmother and she died of heart failure in October 1905. Gertrude died two days later aged 4 days.

I have no idea what happened to Evan after this. I'd like to see if the Evan Mathew James listed in the newspaper is in fact my great grandfather. He would have been around 36 at the outbreak of WW2. Being a blacksmith, I assume he would've been attached to a cavalry regiment?
