Title: Arthur Nind, Military Medal, could someone offer help please?
Post by: jess5athome on Friday 23 October 20 12:38 BST (UK)
Hi, I hope you are all keeping safe and well in these strange times  :)

I am looking for information on a gentleman by the name of Arthur Nind 44275 who was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with the Manchester Regiment in, I assume, 1917.

I don't know his place of birth but it may have been Billingshurst, I have him in the Edinburgh Gazette dated 12-3-1917 but cannot find him in the London edition, would he have been in both?

Other information I have is his Medal index Card which shows he also served in the Border Regiment 36316 and his Medal Rolls copy which confirms all of this, I also have a copy of the Medal Index Card for the award of the Military Medal.

There is also a piece in West Sussex Records on line which states he also served with the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment until the end of 1916, this is where I got the information from regarding him coming from Billingshurst.

If anyone could add anything to this or indeed find him in the London edition of the Gazette it would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks, and please look after yourselves.

Frank.

Hi Frank

Cannot find any matching births in Sussex. Do you have his birth year?

There is one 1892 in Worcester which would be the nearest agewise, for WW1

There is a Gilbert Richard NIND b 1898 Sunninghill, Berks who served with the East Surrey Regiment. His military papers give his address as Billingshurst , Sussex and next of kin as his mother Mrs Amelia NIND of Broadford Bridge Farm , Billingshurst.

The family are on the 1901 and 1911 censuses in Berkshire :
 RG13; Piece: 1167; Folio: 55; Page: 2
 RG14; Piece: 6700; Schedule Number: 135

There is a brother : Arthur Cecil James NIND , born 1896 in Berkshire who may fit.
Arthur Cecil J NIND O-D 1895 Windsor 2c 410a.

This

His award would have been for the action at Beaumont Hamel on 11/1/17.
He was 1 of 54 wounded.

Hi, MaxD, Christine53 and Kloumann, thank you so much for the kind replies  :)

Kloumann, sadly I do not have his birth but am going to have a look into the information kindly given by Christine53,.

MaxD, many, many thanks for the link to the LG try as I did, I could not find it last night, also I think the letters he received in the trenches could provide a fascinating and perhaps a sombre insight into life at the front, so I will have a further look into that.

Christine53, thank you so much for the information, they could well be possibilities and I will certainly have a good look into it, the mention of Billingshurst is like a magnet to me.

Once again, many thanks to you all, it is greatly appreciated, take care.

Frank.

Hello jim1, thank you very much for that, it means a lot, could I ask, is that information from a Battalion War Diary?

Best regards always

Frank

Correct.
They went into reserve on the 12th. Training & working parties etc. so this is the last action before March.

Hi   :)
jim 1, could I humbly ask if you could provide a link to the War Diary entry please?

I have looked at the NA site:

WO-95/1669
WO-95/1669/1
WO-95/1669/2
WO-95/1669/3

I cannot any mention of it, am I looking in the wrong place or have I simply overlooked it?

My apologies for being a pain  :-[

Best Regards always

Frank.

You need to look for the word "edition" at the top, Q.6 is just below.
They were in the trench that runs from Q.6.c to Q.6.a.
The blue dotted line is the old British front line.
In red are the German trenches.
So they've taken all of the trenches up to Q.6 & are about to go again.

Side-by-side if you like that sort of thing:

Hi Frank, I am the great nephew of Arthur Nind. He was born in Sunninghill in 1895. My family would be very interested to know more information about his military record. My Dad has more info about his history if you are interested? Hope to hear back from you soon.

Hi HappyDays101, Sorry for the delay in posting a reply, I don't have a lot of information on him to be honest, only what the good people on here provided me with, that. and a little family history.
I came across his name while looking for a research project, it's something I like to spend time doing.

I am happy to share anything I have with you  :)

Hope to hear from you soon.

Frank.
