I'm hoping someone has the expertise with Canadian records to help me track down what became of a Robert Brown who arrived in Canada in 1910. He was born 29 March 1893 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England the son of James Brown and Isabella nee Pattie but was orphaned at 6 and adopted into his uncle William Lyall's family. The Lyalls arrived in Canada in August 1910 on the Virginian and the following year Robert and his elder brother John can be seen living with the Lyalls in Vancouver. He's actually listed as "Wilbert Lyall" but I'm sure this is him, employed as "messenger". I can see a Robert Brown in 1921 too, a bachelor still and a boarder, employed as a telegraph operator at Shuswap Lake, B.C.
I have access to Ancestry and Findmypast subscriptions but I can't really see any resources there that would help me follow the trail further. Hence my throwing myself on the mercy of any BC experts here who might be able to help me! Any info on Robert, or indeed on brother John or the Lyalls would be much appreciated.

Sandra and DB! I am astonished at what you have managed to dig up for me as I really thought that my post was a long shot at best given how common the surname Brown is.
Thank you so much. If you ever need any reciprocal research doing on this side of 'the pond' do let me know and I'll be happy to help.
A happy and grateful Jon

Thanks again to both of you. I had seen the census 1911/21 census entries and the grave of William Lyall Snr. (d. 1923) but none of the rest of this amazing info so many many thanks for taking the time out to help a fellow researcher :-). It's very satisying to be able to track down individuals who left few clues to their lives, had common names, and upped sticks to the other side of the world.

Thank you Sandra. Thanks to you, I now how a wealth of information on the B.C. Browns. It does seem a bit of a mystery what became of John after 1952. It would seem most likely that he died in B.C. and at some time in the 50s or 60s. Again, it doesn't really help having a name like 'John Brown'. At least the Canadian Browns conquered the family's apparent aversion to having middle names which always make the genealogist's life a little easier!

Considering a common surname of Brown, you did remarkably well to get as much information as you did. Canada has quite strict privacy laws. :)
