Title: House address - Whirlow, Sheffield
Post by: Gerry on Thursday 29 October 20 11:51 GMT (UK)
Without library access  I tried to find a house name/address of a property in Whirlow, Sheffield from the 1911 census using family search.org but the address is not shown.   The occupants include Frederick Charles Wild, b.1851 in Sheffield and his wife Ellen Wild b.1854 in Liverpool.

I am not researching the Wild family, only the name of the property they are living in.   Grateful for help.

Many thanks for the rapid responses.    My interest is drawn from reading a book 'Whirlow The story of an ancient Sheffield Hamlet' which records many old Whirlow properties.

The property I'm looking for is Whirlow Croft Farm which is not the one occupied by the Wild family.  I don't have names but thanks for your help.

Hello again

Just realised my error - another senior moment.  The name should read Whirlow Croft Farm (not Court)

Looking at the summary pages on Ancestry - Whirlow Lane, Whirlow - there are two farms, neither named, one occupied by Mills and the other by Coates.

*this link does not show the close up I intended. Whirlow Croft is N NE of the last W in the place name Whirlow. It is on Whirlow Lane which tallies with the census finds.

Two more farms named on the summary -

Whirlow Hall - Furness and Whirlow - Clark.

Searching old newspapers for Whirlow Croft Farm gives 73 hits between 1917 and 1939 in Sheffield Newspapers.  The address is Croft Lane.

The earliest article on 13 Feb 1917 is for the death of Arthur Clark, age 65, husband of Sarah Clark.

In the Sheffield Daily Telegraph 22 September 1939 there was an ad for a lost dog, it was listed by NEWTON of Whirlow Croft Farm.  (His phone number is 71612 if you want to call  ;D ;D ::))

The Newton family can be found on the 1939 Register, 33 Whirlow Lane (can't post more details due to copyright)

Looking on Streetview it is on the corner of Whirlow Lane and Croft Lane, very much refurbished.  It looks like the two original gateposts are still standing, the one on the left has a sign which I think reads "Whirlow Croft Farm".  I have tried to get a good view of the sign, changing the years on Streetview, but this is the best I can get, I have attached a snip of the sign to see what people think.

Probably the same one Ruskie was looking at earlier.

Probably the same one Ruskie was looking at earlier.

The one I thought it might be is further along Whirlow Lane as it runs NE, just on the sharp bend.

The early maps called it "Whirlow Croft" hence my suggestion, but it may well be wrong. There are a lot of places around the area called "Whirlow" such and such.  :)
