Hello everyone,
Not sure if I should put this here or the Hampshire board so please feel free to move It if that’s best.
My daughter, who worked on the IOW for a couple of years is back there on holiday and bought this great picture in a charity shop. She can’t place it and we’re not sure of it’s period although I’m guessing 1870s.
If anyone knows more we’d be glad to hear it,
Thanks,
Jo. Edited to add: it’s a big picture so slide it to see the rest of it

I can't find a photo taken from the same angle, but itcould possibly be Appley beach, Shanklin IOW.

Hi Jo....It's not as early as you think, it looks more like Edwardian to me. Is it a postcard back?

Alum bay where the steep cliffs are?

It reminded me of Shanklin, it's many years since we were there but when I saw, I thought of The Chine. It's lit up at night if I'm remembering it right and you go for a walk along it. Of course I could be way off the mark ::) ;D We need K. Garrad on the Job....I have just messaged him as he has good knowledge of the area....and he doesn't have to wear a mask 😷 ;D

Nice try, Carol!
Except that I live on the Isle of Man! ;D

Oops! Sorry, schoolgirl error :-[ ;D ;D
Thanks anyway.

Unfortunately, it could be any of the coastal areas on the IoW. Not really any distinguishing features to go by. Lots of the bays had steep steps as shown in this picture. I lived there from 1971-1981 and they were the best of teenage years and my early 20's :) Especially coming from a Lancashire industrial town.

hi Carol. No, it’s bigger than that, a framed print. My daughter said she’ll carefully try to open it when she gets home and see if there’s anything on the back.
Treetotal, I’ll get her to check Appleby and The Chine,
Many thanks all,
Jo

Looks like the Chine end of Shanklin, it looks like it could be where the Chine Inn is situated on the long coastal walk down to the beach where the Fishermen’s Cottage pub is located.
My family had many a lovely holiday there when I was young.

Good evening,
Looks like the old fishermans huts at Bembridge. Mostly holiday homes now though I think.
Will look for pictures.

My daughter put a post on an IOW Facebook page and it’s been suggested that it’s Wheeler’s Bay, apparently used for unloading provisions, particularly coal, onto the beach. There is a picture which looks similar. Sorry, another huge picture.

the unusual building which is mid-right on the second picture is the same building in the first post ... so it's definitely the same location

The two buildings appear quite different. Apart from having completely different frontages (position of windows, doors, different balustrade), in the first one the land slopes up to less than six feet below the front of the building, in the second the stilts have the front of the building at a good twelve feet above the ground. There are two men standing next to the left hand side of the building in picture one which they couldn't do in picture two.
