Hi, I wonder if anybody could help me please. I have researched my 1 cousin 2 x removed who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, age 20 and was wondering where I could find a photo of him or/and his Battalion please?
His name is Private Leslie Butler, Number 17035, Leslie was amongst the first to enlist. He was assigned to No.4 Platoon in "A"company and was one of its specialist snipers. He was a keen cricketer and played for the Bramhall Club. His family grave is at Monton Unitarian Chapelyard a grave is at the cemetery Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme.
Thank you.

His death is recorded in the Manchester Evening News of 29 July 1916 along with a number of his Pals. Some of these have a photograph but not him unfortunately. Newspapers are the most likely source, there was no formal official system of photographing individuals.
An image search on Manchester Pals picked up a number of photos mostly uncaptioned though. Possible that the relevant edition may contain photos?
