Title: Diary > Sunday 1st November
Post by: Roobarb on Sunday 01 November 20 22:44 GMT (UK)
Sunday 1st November

Was about to put the light out last night when I looked at my phone and saw a reminder to book a Tesco delivery. I already had the next two booked and have usually been able to book during the day for the slot I want, but the new lockdown will probably mean that more people are booking so I wanted to get in as soon as the slots became available after midnight. Instead of picking items I now just add the whole of the basket from my last order and will edit it near the time, although I did immediately remove a large bottle of detergent. It's much quicker to do it that way and even if I forgot to make changes my essentials are there. Could hear a helicopter circling around, presumably the police.

Another day when it was blowing a hooligan, a sunny day though. Was thinking of going for a walk when my friend L rang, I told her that I'd emailed the art teacher about the noise during the Zoom classes, L agrees with me that it's disruptive and annoying. She'd actually left before the end of the class when the worst bit of it occurred.

It was getting towards lunchtime, I decided to have a go at making some hummus. Unfortunately it wasn't a success and much as I hate wasting food I ended up chucking it all in the bin. I'll stick with the ready made stuff in future. Now I need to think of what I can do with the rest of the jar of tahini.

Had a sandwich instead and went for a walk, it was still really windy, I didn't stay out long as it was making me too breathless. There were a number of children on the field, a couple of retired teachers in my art class told me that windy weather makes children behave in a really hyper manner.  There were lots of seagulls too, a lot on the ground all facing in the same direction, and some soaring above.

When I came home I started some work on what I hope will be my Christmas card, I'm using any acrylic pour as the basis. I'm directing the paint more on this rather than leaving it to chance, and doing different areas separately. So far so good.

My friend A phoned to see how I'm getting on, she had arranged a date in about a week to have a new carpet laid, she doesn't know whether that will go ahead. I asked if she heard the helicopter last night, she hadn't but she told me that there had been a burglary at a café in town and at a pub in the nearby village. Perhaps they were looking for the culprits.

Roasted a chicken with potatoes and carrots, also did cauliflower, broccoli and broad beans. I'd forgotten to order Yorkshire puds, couldn't be bothered making any and didn't even know if I have any flour. Dinner was great anyway.

Was watching TV when I came across a programme with Michael Palin talking about his screen career. There were sketches from Monty Python, Ripping Yarns and Life of Brian. I haven't laughed so much since 2019.   :D

Apparently it is a well known fact by teachers that windy days turn children into hooligans

Roobarb - well done for getting advanced slots booked... I did the same last week as they seem to be getting filled up and will be even more so now... I usually puta £40 bottle of champagne in my basket then go back at my leisure ...one of these days I’m going to forget I’m sure!
Yes, it’s true what they say about children and windy days...
I saw the Michael Palin programme advertised... I like him so will have to catch up with it... well done starting you Christmas card design... need to do mine just got last 50+ face coverings to do first...

Today has been a dull and dreary day... warmer outside than in the house...
Read the papers as usual... lots on US election, Sean Connery, new lockdown  rules... not much else... magazines didn’t have any really interesting articles in and the crossword I virtually finished... change if compiler I think... or more I knew answers to!
After lunch daughter FaceTimed so we had a nice chat with her and the boys... always lifts the spirits when I see them but then sad when we say goodbye... talked about Christmas... not much to say as who knows what’s going to happen..
OH disappointed no more golf... ridiculous really as it’s outside only plays with one other... I am sorry too as that means he’s at home all the time.... think I’ll be hibernating in my work room making Christmas cards for a month!
Did the ironing, listened to the radio.. Book club had the author of the last book we read so I found it interesting to listen to her and others thoughts about it...
Dinner was roast beef, pots, parsnips, Yorkshire’s, green vegs...
Watched tv... New series called Roadkill... not too bad ...
Came to bed early for a read...
Very windy out tonight...

Hope alls well with everyone else

So sorry to hear you are going back into lockdown. Boris wants to save Christmas.
I am amazed at what you can still do in lockdown. Just 2 things spring to mind and that is you can still get takeaways and children still going to school.
Since our lockdown in March (NZ), we have had 2 community outbreaks. The first one in August we all went up to level 2 and some new rules regarding the wearing of marks came in. Auckland went into full lockdown. Our next outbreak was a couple of weeks ago where an engineer working on a ship managed to get infected. He got tested as soon as he became unwell. 2 workmates and a household contact also caught it. No need for any lockdown measures. Close contacts were asked for self-isolate, which they did. Most of our cases are caught at the border, so helping to stop it getting into the community.
We are constantly reminded to use the tracing apt whenever we are out or sign in. All places need a QR code and a sign-in sheet. We are still in level 1, but level 1 is not level none.
It really gets me mad that some people think the rules don't apply to them and they won't get it anyway because everyone else is doing as instructed.

Well, Guy Fawkes is just around the corner. Fireworks go on sale on Monday but Saturday night people were out letting off fireworks. Guessing these were leftover from last year. Along with the fireworks making a noise just about every dog in my area were voicing their opinion.

Just been pottering around in my garden now that spring is here. Roast Beef, roast potatoes and beans for my main meal tonight. T.V and bed

Stay safe Stay strong

P.S. Just read Prince William had a bad dose of coronavirus early this year but kept it secret as he didn't want to alarm anybody.

Carol, I am surprised you can buy fireworks in NZ. They have been illegal here for years!

Roobarb, tahini should keep fairly well. I make a sauce of tahini, water, lemon juice and crushed garlic to drizzle over middle eastern themed meals. There are lots of recipes on the internet.

Caroline, I feel your pain having hubby home all day. Though yours does sound very good with his bread making and summer bbq-ing, it’s nice to have a regular break from them.  ;)

My Sunday was very quiet - went to the supermarket looking for Marmite. None to be found which made me quite annoyed actually. Visited daughter. Took my dog for a short walk - it was quite hot and humid so not very pleasant trudging around the streets.

Below average purchased quiche and salad for dinner. I was expecting it to be a bit tastier.

Yes, Fireworks for sale everywhere. They are slowly narrowing down the days that you can buy them. SPCA and a lot of other groups want them banned. They are a B*#*#Y nuisance as far as I am concerned and expensive. $150 for a small box. I had a house fire in the 1980s started by fireworks. Skyrockets were banned shortly after and then tom thumbs.
The problem I have is they start on 1 Nov and finish sometime in the New Year.

I believe fireworks are available in the UK too. It seems that Australia might be the only place where they are illegal, except maybe sparklers.  :)

Of course licensed fireworks displays are allowed with lots of rules and regs and safety considerations in place.

Carol

Double happies, and those ones that looked like hard jubes, and you threw them on the ground banned as well. Yes, they are expensive, not like in the 70's when you could choose what you wanted and it didn't cost an arm or leg, as long as you had heaps of sparklers, it didn't matter if a Catherine Wheel or Skyrocket was a dud.

There is/was talk of having the controlled fireworks displays only, with the banning of fireworks altogether. But with COVID I have hardly seen any advertisement for them this time.

I haven't seen advertising for them either. But out shopping today they were everywhere. There is even a shipping container up the road from me selling fireworks.
You are right Kiwihalfpint with those that are banned I just could not think of them. It was a skyrocket that caused our fire. Out for dinner and come home to find your house was on fire.

Morning / evening To all you down under...
I think you’re in the best place being right the other side of the world and away from most countries....
I like your countries regulations they are far more strict than ours and your ban on travel has clearly helped enormously as to the spread of Covid....
Wish that our government had adopted some of the same stringent rules you’ve both had.... alas not... now we could be in an even longer cycle of lockdown so rumours have it...
I say just round up all the morons and find some suitable place to put them all and we’d be fine.... the middle of the Sahara or Gobi deserts sound a good idea to me!
Now of course there’s panic buying in the shops because people think they’re not going to be able to get Xmas presents..... more loo roll hoarding....
it beggars belief...

Hope you all have a good evening / day and let’s hope for the best and plan for the worst.... keep cheerful and safe and well....

I will carry on as I have done over the last however months, we abided by the rules and regs and have done all the right things

I never panic bought like friends of ours did then had the cheek to say they had to throw food away, my reply was " don't order so much then" but what a waste, I only managed 3 deliveries but managed to shop at quiet times, it worked for me

I didn't have a very good day yesterday but I feel we all ought to keep our chin up, feel better today

Today is my birthday and my daughter, husband and my grandson are coming here for an evening meal, brought in by them, we are all on Phase 1, so we can have 6, that will be nice, pity our  granddaughter is in Sheffield but little sweetheart sang to me this morning, she had remembered I had said at one time I miss my mum singing "happy birthday" to me over the years, my twin brother rang from Teignmouth , his birthday tomorrow, they had 15 cruisers in the bay he said, it was a very windy couple of days so I suppose they are well sheltered

Blustery weather today , look like rain although the sun is out

Chin up, stay safe and keep warm

🎉🎉🎉🎉Many Happy Returns of the Day🎉🎉🎉🎉

How wonderful that you’ve managed to get in before lockdown and have your family round for a meal...I’m sure you’ll all enjoy it that much more...

You’re right we should keep our chins up...Sometimes it’s hard and like you yesterday wasn’t a good day for me either...

My SiL’s mother’s birthday is on 5th Nov and they had arranged to meet her at a NT place on Sunday 😢 I think it will just be him going but I know how disappointed she’ll be not seeing the boys....
Enjoy your day and hope your Hubbie waits on you hand and foot you deserve one day of leisure at least.

Best wishes to you 🥂 🎂

Caroline, what a shame about your OH's golf, it does seem crazy when he would be allowed to go for a walk in the countryside with his friend, the same thing but without the clubs! I definitely recommend the Michael Palin programme to cheer you up, I had tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks.  :D :D I've only ever seen excerpts from Life of Brian but having seen this particular ones I'd love to watch the whole thing. It's on Netflix but I don't have that, will have to keep an eye out for it on TV, no doubt it will come around some time. It was really funny hearing about the people they had doing the crowd scenes. In fact I'm going to see if it's on iPlayer and if so I'll watch it again.  :D

Carol, there certainly seems to have been a lot of sensible precautions re Covid, I hope the levels stay low.

Ruskie, thanks for the tips re tahini, don't want to waste that too. I envy you having fireworks made illegal, I added my name to a petition last year to do the same here but nothing has changed.

I had an email to say that it would be debated in the house of commons Today   I have not looked to see if it is on their schedule.

We have had fireworks going off near me for over a week, I have to give my dog Xanax.  ::)

Thanks for that Rosie, I've had a good trawl but can't find anything more about it. It's a disgrace that fireworks are still available to the public to buy when they're used as implements for vandalism and even weapons. That's quite apart from the trauma to animals. The government should at least insist on fireworks being made silent, I believe they have them ni Australia.

(I thought at first you were saying my use of tahini was to be debated in the house of commons!  ;D ;D )

;D. I had not noticed that I had left the tahini bit in the quote.   Ooops.  I have never had tahini  :-\

I just watched the end of the debate, can't say that I am any wiser but they won't be banned.  They are certainly concerned about the effect on the police / fire & NHS this years home firework displays could have.  I think that it is one of those things that will take time to sort out., certainly animal and ex service charities are concerned about it.

I have had fireworks in my home garden for over 60 years.

No tragedies or mishaps ever.

Have never been to an organised display.

Would sorely miss having them at home if that's yet another pleasure denied us by this nanny state.

That's what people always used to do - have a bonfire and fireworks in their gardens on November the fifth. Unfortunately that's not the case now, I've been hearing fireworks going off for a fortnight now. In fact I heard some earlier this evening, I can't think of any reason why someone would be letting off fireworks on a Monday evening when it's only the 2nd November. Youths use them to scare and intimidate people and for vandalism. They're not restricted to November, people save them and let them off at Christmas and I've heard many at midnight on New Year's Eve. One of the results of this is that dogs and cats are left terrified and shaking not just on one evening but on multiple occasions. It's a far cry from what used to be a happy occasion for family and friends on the appropriate date.
The move to ban firework sales to the public doesn't stem from the state, it's from the numerous people who have signed the petition. The sooner the government does something about it the better as far as I'm concerned.

As a child in the 50s the best bits of bonfire night were making the guy, making the bonfire, baked potatoes in the embers, eating Parkin and treacle toffee and a sparkler. I loathed anything that banged, the pretty ones were just about OK but only just! Guess what I still don’t like fireworks and the accompanying bangs, if they were just pretty that’d be OK!

Now I live about a quarter of a mile from where the British Musical Firework Championships are held in Southport, I’m told they’re wonderful but with hearing aids removed and ear plugs inserted you can still hear the bangs! They were cancelled this year, I was very happy!

I haven’t heard any fireworks yet this year, seeing as it just keeps raining maybe that’s putting people off.

Well your Birthday is almost over Louisa Maude so I will wish you a Happy Year to come .
The end of the tunnel seems a long way off and if we can stay positive and relatively cheerful we are more likely to get through.
Let’s hope by this time next year you can celebrate properly .
What we all do now will obviously determine what things will be like in the
future.
I know I am stating the obvious ,but so many do not  realise !
lLet’s hope they see sense.
Well done all you walkers, bakers, sewers , workers, such a lot of positives in your posts .The mundane is very settling in difficult times .
Thanks to you all.
Viktoria.

Thank you Viktoria and everyone for their good wishes, I had a really nice day and the weather was reasonable not that I went out

My daughter and grandson  came with fish chips that was all very nice

So, today back to some sort of normality , raining so no washing out today

Yes, we must all try to be upbeat , I think we have all had our down days but we must try to look forward to better times, they will come but we have to all be sensible, most of us are, just a few silly people are spoiling it

Take care Viktoria  and fellow diarists,  keep up your diaries  which I find I very interesting,   I enjoy the humour

That will teach me for not checking the quote  ;D

As for stopping the sale of fireworks they did say that if they did that it would only lead to people purchasing them elsewhere eg internet.  Who knows then how or where they would have been produced and how 'safe' they would be.

We have had them going off for about 3 weeks now,  it was 3 o'clock the other morning also 2pm when I walked the dog.  Diwali last year they were going off until 3 in the morning for more than one night.
