Hi!
I am trying to track down any living relatives descended from the Bates family. They were
Charles b. 1892
Alice b. 1893
Albert b. 1895 (married Ada)
Emma b. 1898
Arthur b. 1904
Elsie b. 1906
Thomas b. 1908.
They are all listed as being born and living in Forty Green, Bucks in the 1911 census. I am descended from the oldest son Joseph (William).

Have you checked the Surname Interests Board - link at bottom of page under Tools
Have you checked if anybody has a tree on Ancestry?
They may all have lived in Bucks in 1911 but no guarantees they continued to do so.
Have you looked for marriages for them?
Have you looked for the 3 boys on the 1939 register?
Their ages on the 1911 are not necessarily correct - eg - Arthur was actually Arthur James born Dec qtr 1903 so you need to check freebmd for their correct birthyears & possible other christian names
Arthur James Bates b 26.9.1903 died 1984 in Bucks

Hi!
Thank you for your reply!
No, I didn’t know about the Surname interest board so I will certainly have a look at that.
I have looked for marriages and I have found entries for all of them marrying in Amersham District and the dates they married all tie up with their age but I am not certain if it is them or not, like you say they may have left the area.
The only one I am sure of is Albert as I have a newspaper cutting of his wedding anniversary. He lived in Coleshill which I believe is in Amersham.
The only person I know who would have known them is my mother and unfortunately she is unable to help at the moment. It’s such a shame as I have lots of photos and letters from them and I’d love to share them.
I have noticed already they liked to use any names but their own. One wrote a letter to her brother and signed it “your sister Doll” and Joseph my great grandfather often went by the name William in quite a few records!
I have found Joseph on the 1939 register but to be honest I hadn’t even thought about looking for the other boys, I will do that now! Thank you very much for your help it’s been very helpful!

Charles was born Dec qtr 1891 and there is a death for him on 21.12.1962 in Amersham. He left a will and probate was granted to Thomas Bates occ builder
Charles address was Forty Green
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
Entry is showing in 1963 - not 1962
EDIT
He is on the 1939 register with wife & child. His marriage is on freebmd in 1926 - he married Ada Allen
-
That’s great thank you very much for that. Would it be wrong to assume if probate went to his brother that he wasn’t married when he died?
-
Sorry - see my edit above. He did marry
-
Ah yes that’s great thank you! Daughter is Dorothy did I get that right?
-
Albert was Albert Edward b Sept qtr 1895. Married Ada P Carter March qtr 1923
Albert Edward Bates b 7.8.1895 died 1980 Bucks
Re Dorothy - daughter of Charles - Entry is visible on register so she must have died. Born 1927 per freebmd
-
Dorothy Maud Bates b 3.7.1927 died 16.7.2019 Bucks. She left a will
-
That’s really helpful thank you very much for that! Maybe Dorothy never married if she’s still listed as Bates?
In regards to Albert I found this newspaper cutting amongst all the photos and letters I inherited.
-
Lovely photo.
Ada Phoebe Bates b 10.5.1897 died 1979 Bucks
-
That’s great thank you very much for your help! I don’t live too far so hopefully when all this is over I’ll be able to go pay a visit and see where they were from!
-
Re the girls other names
Alice Eliza March qtr 1894 - never married - died 1980 birthdate 12.1.1894
Emma Jane Dec qtr 1897 - married Harry A Furminger 1927 - died 1966
Elsie Lilian June qtr 1905 - married Charles H Bourne 1930
Thomas was plain Thomas - March qtr 1908 which also means he could have been born Dec 1907. Married Marjorie L Jones 1935 Bucks. He died 1980 birthdate 31.12.1907
They also had a daughter Lily b Dec qtr 1890 died March qtr 1891
Plus a daughter Annie b Sept qtr 1892 but no death and not on 1901 entry
-
That’s really helpful thank you so much!
I think I have a photo of Alice, which is quite exciting! Well I have hundreds of photos but I don’t know who they are so
I’m slowly piecing tiny clues together. Knowing the siblings and ages adds more pieces to the puzzle! Thank you once again!

Elsie Lilian Bourne b 18.3.05 died 1994 Bucks
Arthur J Bates married Florence K Wright 1930
Look up Arthur on the 1939 register - other family members on same page ;D
-
I’ve just looked it up, thanks for that!
I’m a bit confused though as I assumed Elsie was their daughter but she has a different surname. Hmm will have to do some digging on that one! I’ve looked up where they lived and it looks idyllic, little village opposite a pub!
-
Oh no scrap that I’ve confused myself! Bourne is her married name as you found out!
-
I can't find anything on Annie b 1892. GRO shows mmn Cox which is correct but she is not on the 1901 nor is she elsewhere
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9YR-FYV
No death 1892 - 1901
No obvious marriage - so ??? ??? ???
-
My family like to just disappear I’ve discovered ;D
-
My husband is a Bates. According to Ancestry tree he is 2nd cousin 3x removed of Joseph William.
Will have a look later for some of those other names.
-
Hi!
Wow sounds promising, I look forward to hearing what you find out!
-
Unfortunately I don't have anything to add to what you already have.
His line goes down from James 1822
-
Ah no worries thank you for letting me know! Either way I must be a (distant) relation to your husband!
