Sarah MACKNESS, born 1834 Raunds, married Robert TEBBUTT on Christmas Day 1855 in Rushden.
She had a son, Albert Jebez Tebbutt born in the Thrapston Registration District in the first quarter of 1859. After that, nothing.
Robert TEBBUTT married again - to Mary Ann TILLEY - in the Stamford district in the third quarter of 1861.
So, what happened to Sarah? I can't find a record of her in any census, a death or a burial notice. Did she die after childbirth and was one of those whose deaths weren't reported? Did Robert and Sarah just go their separate ways?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers Alan

Was Albert with his father in 1861 :-\

Robert TEBBUTT married again
As a widower or as a bachelor?
When was Robert born please, I can only find a much older gentleman.

Death of Sarah Tebbutt in Thrapston District Jan-Mar 1859 Vol-3b, Page-135, Age not given. Source: FreeBMD. GRO Online indexes does not show this record.
-
Yes it does :-\
TEBBUTT, SARAH age 75
GRO Reference: 1859 March Quarter in THRAPSTON Volume 03B Page 135
Added - I wonder if they have misread the age at death ::)

I was looking at this marriage in 1871 Middlesex
Sarah Tabbutt widow father Joseph Mackness deceased - was that her father's name?
-
Good find Milliepede, That was his name ;D. Joseph Mackness was a soldiers pensioner on the Tebbutt marriage.
I have confirmed age at death was 75 according to newspaper so we can rule out that other death
-
That 1871 marriage is worth looking at.
To add a bit of extra spice, Mary Ann (Tilley) Tebbutt died in Stamford in December 1873, presumably after childbirth.
Robert Tebbutt then took in a housekeeper - Rebecca Roberts who had a son (1881) and a daughter (1877). They emigrated out to New Zealand where Robert died in 1901. (Info from a correspondent there)

I can't get the 1871 marriage info to fit with census after that :-\
Spouse I think died 1874 Joseph Bryan or Bryant - father Lucas per the marriage.
-
Oh dear hang on there's another marriage in 1900 Islington for a Sarah Bryan father Joseph Mackness deceased soldier :o
Says she is a widow age 52. Groom is William Lach 48 butcher widower.
More extra spice for you to look at there!

This just in from New Zealand!
Born at St Martins Guernsey Island, Mrs. Tebbutt came to New Zealand with her husband, Mr. Robert Tebbutt, in the ship Monte Rose about 50 years ago. They landed at Auckland and after staying there for about 3 weeks, proceeded to the Whangarei district, taking up land and farming at Opuawhanga. Mrs. Tebbutt is enjoying fairly good health (aged 91) and she reads without the aid of glasses. NEW ZEALAND HERALD, VOLUME LXXII, ISSUE 22069, 27 MARCH 1935
She died there on September 1st 1935: headstone photo on Find a grave.

A case of bilateral bigamy then?!? Unusual, but not unknown.
Putting my civil law hat on, the evidence presented here would satisfy the balance of probabilities (ie more likely than not) that is the case. Obviously it wouldn't pass the "beyond reasonable doubt" test without the paperwork and perhaps other testimony.

Divorce in those days would have been expensive so this sort of thing was not unusual :)

Also a side issue that could explain why the Tebbutts went out to New Zealand (and not to escape the possible marriage issues). It may be that one or both of them suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis and New Zealand was considered "a health resort for consumptives" in the 1880s.
This is a good read:

... Mary Ann (Tilley) Tebbutt and one of her daughters died of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Sarah Tebbutt it seems was in London for ten years before she married Joseph Bryan and had three children by him. There is a tree on Ancestry that has the 1861 census with her and Joseph as man and wife in Finsbury.

Looking for the end of her journey possible death
Sarah Lack Jun 1902 Northampton age 55
She is 55 in 1901 and William is widowed by 1911.

Albert Tebbutt enlisted with the dragoons and served in Afganistan in 1878. Can't be certain but think he died in Lambeth district in the 1890s.

Well, well, well ...
Robert Tebbutt 2; Sarah Mackness 4!!
I've found another marriage for her after Joseph Bryan died:
The Church of St John the Evangelist, Drury Lane: April 12th 1881 to blacksmith James George Allen
I haven't discovered what happened to him before husband No. 4 in 1901!!

Clearly partial to wedding cake!
Shouldn’t she have married as Allen then for wedding 4 not Bryan?
-
I've looked back at the 1881 and 1901 marriage records and the census returns from 1881, 1891 and 1900 trying to assess consistency.
In 1881 Sarah Bryant was living at 20 Holles Street which is the address recorded on the 1881 marriage which took place almost immediately afterwards.
In 1891 Sarah A Allen was living (in what looks like) Bear Yard, St Clement Danes, Westminster
In 1900 marriage Sarah gave same address as William Lack in Clerkenwell
By 1901 the Lacks had moved back to Rushden - corroborative: 3 year old son George born in Clerkenwell
1881: age 40, birth Wymington, Bedfordshire
1891: age 52, birth ditto
1901: age 55, birth ditto
William is a widower in 1911 still in Rushden. No convincing death for Sarah Lack between 1901 and 1911 but there is a Sarah Ann Tebbutt (aged 62) died 4th qtr 1903 Wellingborough district

Well, there's a turn up for the book! Sarah had an older brother, Owen, who appeared before Northamptonshire Assizes in January 1886 on two counts of bigamy. He pleaded not guilty to one which was discharged but guilty to the other and was sentenced to one day imprisonment. There is a report of the proceedings in the Northampton Herald of the day - and the judge's summing up makes interesting reading with respect to the bigamy laws in operation at the time.
Bigamy it seems was a family affair!

I went to look for the piece you just referenced and found...
“ BRISTOL ASSIZES.—Friday.
Mrs. Tebbutt." I had not any notion that Tebbutt was married man, until the little affair of his wife coming down. Tebbutt made Miss Rowe presents brooch and locket, with his and her likeness in it. In consequence of something I heard from Tebbutt abou
18 April 1863 - Northampton Mercury ”
It’s a VERY long report.
A family business indeed!
