On a birth certificate in 1938, which took place in Scotland, the childs parents (Alexander McDowall & Violet Steele) (all three no longer with us) have their marriage date and location on it. Its 26 February 1936 New York, USA.
I have searched all the online resources I can find and I cannot find this marriage. How do I find out for sure if this marriage took place? Theres a possibility it didn't.
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Have you been able to find an outgoing or incoming passenger list for either of them?
I'm not seeing anything.

There is a death Springburn Glasgow in 1960 for an Alexander McDowall aged 69 years.
Which would make him born 1891 but still having no luck on passenger lists.
Alexander McDowall - 69 years - 1960 644/4 18 - Springburn

Thanks for all the replies. Violet Steele McDowall was a twin who only lasted few hours. I cannot find them on passenger lists either. Im beginning to think the marriage never took place.

Puzzling,isn't it?
Just to get back to Sandra's question-could you confirm the years of birth for Violet and Alexander please? A tree on Ancestry gives Violet's as 1914 and Alexander's as 1886 so quite an age difference.
Makes you wonder if either of them were ever in New York at all. Flight of fancy on Violet's part?

It's been a while since I checked, but I thought that many New York marriages weren't available online, even in indexes. Has that changed?
If that is still the case, then it's possible that the marriage you seek has not been indexed or digitized and put online.
Either way, it'll be challenging, since it doesn't seem clear whether the marriage took place in New York City or State.
Have you looked for a marriage notice for them in the newspapers?
Regards,
Josephine

(I was typing this at the same time as the above.)
New York is now pretty well covered for online indexes/records for marriages in that time frame. Ancestry has indexes for New York State marriages and New York City marriage licenses & records. There are also free NYC marriage indexes for various years here - https://archive.org/details/nycmarriageindex
Family Search has this database for NYC - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2143225 Some of the boroughs have some missing transcriptions for some years in that database, but there are also bride's/groom's indexes covering a similar time frame at www.italiangen.org and www.germangenealogygroup.com.
