in paperspast I came across at Pahi Kaipaia NZ Marriage 1899 October 26 of Joyce, Annie eldest daughter of William Joyce and
granddaughter of the late James Joyce of Drumlin Hill, County Armagh Ireland.
The groom Thomas Herbert Barwell youngest son of William Harrison Barwell
I am wondering if anyone has an interest in this family and what other information has
been compiled. I have a long standing interest of any Joyce Family especially of Drumlin Hill.
Would William Joyce have relocated to NZ due ti property being more easily accessible? This would be a very long ways from home.
Appreciate the quality and kindliness of the Rootchat forum

I have modified my previous post, as he was the same man. but if you look in papers past with “Constable Joyce” as the search term, there are a lot of mentions in Tairua.
He fell off a horse and was badly injured.

Definitely in Tairua from 1880. Possible mentions Auckland 1877 and Opotiki 1878

As already mentioned, your best option to obtain the early details about William would be to purchase a printout* of his death registration. Of course it does depend on the knowledge of the informant for these.
Here is a list of the data collected at the time of registration in 1903......
When and where died
Name and surname
Rank or profession or occupation
Sex and Age
Detail of Death
Cause of death
Duration of last illness
Medical attendant who certified the cause of death and when they last saw the deceased

-
Did it throw any light on how he came to be here? Etc?
-
He seems to be an interesting character...even tho his superior was against his request for the
transfer...Constable Joyce still persisted in "demanding" it..and shows that he was in New Zealand 1869. Another article had him dismissed from the Constabulary as he had married without the permission of his superiors. The expression of "no flies on him", comes to mind.

There are two entries for a William JOYCE on the New Zealand Militia and Armed Constabulary database, one a Militia entry, the other for the Armed Constabulary.

Hi Mona Lisa,
Thanks Minniehaha for posting the two transcriptions.
I should perhaps explain the context of the entries above based on my knowledge.
William JOYCE emigrated alone from London to Auckland, NZ per Ganges, arriving on 12 October 1863.
http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~shipstonz/genealogy/PassLists/ganges1863.html
My interpretation of the first record above is that William immediately enlisted (the record states 11 October 1863 (sic), so one record is incorrect) in the Mauku Rifles and saw action at Titi Hill-Mauku within two weeks of arriving! After this he joined the 3rd Waikato Regiment (a mumber of men were seconded from this unit to the Commissariat Transport Corps to assist with logistics/supply). He was subsequently awarded a Land Grant at Cambridge.
He then went 'over the ditch', as we say here, to Australia, because that second record shows that in December 1868 he attested for the New Zealand Armed Constabulary at Melbourne and then travelled to New Zealand (with other recruits) per Gothenburg.
He subsequently served with the Auckland Police.
As it happens, I have transcribed the passenger list of the Gothenburg and have it here.
William JOYCE attested for the Armed Constabulary on 26 December 1868 at Melbourne. He was a farmer born at Co. Armagh, aged 29 and 5' 10" in height. He served in the 3rd Waikato Regiment from 1863-1866 inclusive (from my wider reading taking their discharge after three years was common and I suspect that it signalled the end of their contracted period of service).
See next post for some background information which will supply some context to his story.
-
The following is taken from my draft instruction sheet for the index mentioned above. I have included some reference material. Those highlighted in bold would be of most value to your research:
"Following the disastrous defeat of colonial forces at Te Ngutu o te Manu in September 1868 and the subsequent advance of Titokowaru’s forces into the southern Taranaki, the New Zealand Government responded by sending Captain STACK to Melbourne with a brief to recruit 200 men for service in the Armed Constabulary. During December 1868 and January 1869 newly-attested recruits were dispatched to Wellington on board commercial steamers plying the regular Melbourne-New Zealand route.
The Gothenburg was the fourth ship to transport a draft of Armed Constabulary recruits from Melbourne. The vessels in order of departure were:
Alhambra - Departed Melbourne 9 December 1868 with 99 recruits, (plus another 30 recruited at Hokitika) via Hokitika, Greymouth and Nelson, arrived Wellington 18 December 1868.
Otago- Departed Hobson’s Bay 12 December 1868 for Wellington via Bluff, Port Chalmers and Lyttelton with passengers with 41 recruits, arrived Wellington 24 December 1868. Recruits taken on to Wanganui by ss Wanganui.

The book Blood Brothers is online as an ebook.

An excellent read for anyone researching Australian recruitment for the Maori War of the 1860's, recognizing that many were from other countries or had previously been in New Zealand.

EDIT............ I have a long standing interest of any Joyce Family especially of Drumlin Hill.........
Appreciate the quality and kindliness of the Rootchat forum
Hello from a Waikato researcher.
While JOYCE is not one of the early settler families that I have looked into, I'm aware that it is a surname that has been in these parts, for a long time. Should you wish to delve deeper, you will find interments in the Hautapu Cemetery [out in the Waipa County a few miles, but the Cambridge Cemetery, since the 1860's] and the Hamilton City cemeteries data bases.
As George appears as a middle name, there is a Peter George JOYCE d. 9/1/1911; 27 years, interment at Hautapu Cemetery.

Hi Mona Lisa,
Another tidbit.
From 'Nominal Roll of No. 1 Division, Armed Constabulary as at 23 July 1869, Bay of Plenty'.
'Constable William JOYCE, joined 8 Dec 1868.'
Source: Archives New Zealand, reference: No.1 Division Armed Constabulary Nominal Return - Officers, NCOs [Non Commissioned Officers], constables and non-effective - 1869 (number, rank, name, going date, date of becoming non-effective, parades (?) showing cause of becoming non-effective) (R17717718)
Agency: ACIS Series: 17649 Record group: P8 Box/Item: 5/5 Record no. (CDO 69/5189)
This quote is again taken from my instruction sheet for this file for submission to the New Zealand Society of Genealogists:
'Historical Context: During the time covered by this file, detachments of No. 1 Division were based in the Bay of Plenty at Matata, Fort Galatea, Fort Clarke and Fort Alfred. The forts were defensive positions sited to protect the region against Maori attacks, and also used as bases for General Whitmore’s advance into the Urewera Ranges in pursuit of Te Kooti. Fort Galatea, now the site of Fort Galatea Scenic Reserve, was located at Murupara, on the left bank of the Rangitaiki River. Built by a force under Major ROBERTS command in April 1869. Fort Clarke was located at Matahina and built in May 1869 during Col. Whitmore’s invasion of Te Urewera. Held by a Maori force commanded by Capt. PREECE as late as 1871. Fort Alfred was located at Te Teko, sited about 3km south of the town near the left bank of the Rangitaiki River, exact position not known. It was built in 1869 as a supply depot for Col. Whitmore’s invasion of Te Urewera. In May 1869 Fort Alfred supported a detachment of 120 European Armed Constabulary, 418 Maori troops and logistic support elements. Possibly a small defence work with a larger adjacent camp. For a contemporary description of the area and these forts refer to Hawke's Bay Herald, 6 August 1869, Page 3 - Matata.'
