I am guessing that "Refory" relates to Reformatory. Does anyone have access to records pertaining to this institution?
Have a Harry Farquharson aged 16 yrs on census (along with many many others). Said he was a 'Farm Serv". Would like to see any more details about him.

I wonder if this was Harry?
Aberdeen Press and Journal 20 November 1867
Juvenile Offence - On Thursday Harry Farquharson, a boy of 12 or 13 from Meanecht, was brought before Sherriff Thomson for theft of some clothing from Cairnhill. He admitted the offence and was sentanced ten days in jail and five years in the reformatory
-
Quite possibly. I was hoping to find some mention of an offence but wasn't too sure how to access any records. I went onto British Newspapers Archives but found nothing. I haven't a sub but I took a look anyway. Hey; quite excited about this. Could indeed be him.
-
Could this be Harry in 1861 Living at Commercial Inn Tarland
Jane Pirie 52 Wife of labourer b Tarland
Mary Gray 24 Daughter
John Mitchell 10 Son
Hary C Farquharson 5 Grandson b Tarland
Added - The newspaper report was from FindMyPast
-
Trying to work those relationships out but it probably is him. The C perhaps stands for Calder as he called himself Harry Calder Farquharson in New Zealand when he married in 1894. Up til now it hasn't been easy to find anything on him. But slowly getting there. I'll have to find what Jane's maiden name was and check marriages. Once again, the surnames don't match as daughter is known as a 'Gray' and son is a 'Mitchell'.
-
I've picked up John Mitchel born 2/5/1852 Aberdeen to Jane Scott and John Mitchell.
I don't know where the name Pirie comes in. Still looking.
-
Came across this family in 1851 with Jane as a Gray and widow but no daugter Mary :-\
Jane Gray Widow 40 1811 Pauper Tarland, Aberdeenshire
Ellen Gray Daughter 12 Tarland, Aberdeenshire
Johanna Gray Daughter 9 Tarland, Aberdeenshire
Lewis Gray Son 5 Tarland, Aberdeenshire
N K Gray Son 0 Tarland, Aberdeenshire
Can't see a baptism/birth for Harry
-
I think this is the death of Jane Pirie in 1862 in Tarland which lists her as the widow of Alex Gray and married to James Pirie
-
The family in 1841 with daughter Mary living in Tarland?
Alexander Gray 29 Tailor Aberdeenshire
Jean Gray 31 Aberdeenshire
Betrage Gray 7 Aberdeenshire
Mary Gray 5 Aberdeenshire
Helen Gray 3 Aberdeenshire
Alexander Gray 2 Aberdeenshire
Henry Emslie 11 Aberdeenshire

Marriage on Scotlands People
James Pirie - Jean Smith 1860 Tarland

Awesome.
I have tried everything for a baptism for Harry. No luck. Will have to get his marriage in NZ in 1894 and see who he puts down as his mother. Can do it online and they are quick. This is coming together beautifully.
-
Just found a birth on SP that might be Harry??
Harry Grey b Tarland 4 Jan 1855 - Mother Beatrice Grey age 21 - Registered by grandmother Jean Gray
-
Beatrice married Thomas Forbes in 1861 Alford Aberdeenshire and died in 1905 in Alford
-
So Harry was the son of Beatrice; hence g/son to Jean/Jane on the 1861 census. I am gobsmacked to be honest. This is fantastic. I didn't try the various spelling of 'Gray'. Should have done so. So perhaps little Harry's father must have been a Farquharson. There was always some suspicion about Harry's birth and no record with the family. Maybe Harry's dad had a slip between the sheets with Beatrice.
So wonderful; thank you so much. Will update when I receive the marriage cert. in 1894.
-
Yes, that would be Mary in the 1841 census. And 'Betrage' would be 'Beatrice'.
-
Fingers crossed re the marriage cert ;D
Re Harry's birth I just searched on Harry's born in Tarland and I must admit that I missed it the first time round :-\
This has been great puzzle and really brightened a wet Sunday morning ;D
-
If I bought another £7 credits with SP would it show the fathers' name?
-
Sadly no - the only info listed I posted but I can send you a copy if you send me a pm with your email address
-
What do you mean by PM? Have an email but ..

Sorry private message using the green symbol under my avator picture so your address is not on public display

As Jean/Jane Smith or Gray or Pirie is described as a pauper in at least one census after 1845, it would be worth checking whether the Tarland Parochial Board (Poor relief) records have survived, because if they have they may well contain quite a lot of information about her and her family.
Start with Aberdeen Archives https://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/services/libraries-and-archives/aberdeen-city-and-aberdeenshire-archives
-
I've written to the Parochial Board this morning - will see what response I get.
Also ordered the marriage cert for Harry.
If Beatrice had a child outside of wedlock would she have been brought before the Kirk Sessions? Just thought there might be some more information re who the father was?

Yes, and yes.

Have found a reference for Kirk Sessions 1853-1898 Tarland and Migvie - Minute Book held at the National Records Office. Country Code GB; Repository code 234 and Reference CH2/351/3.
Does the NRS have a research service that you know of? Or perhaps a reputable private researcher that may be able to look for information on Beatrice Grey/Gray in approx. 1855/56.

The NRS do not have a research service.
You can hire a reputable researcher via https://www.asgra.co.uk/ but unfortunately the NRS is still closed due to coronavirus - see https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/about-us/service-status - so they won't be able to do anything for you meantime.
-
I can't believe NRS is still in lockdown.

Hi, following on from Forfarians post, Oldscottish.com have the minutes of a Poor Law appeal by Jean Gray or Smith (which was refused). I'm not sure if you'll find any useful information. They will charge £3 for a copy of the minutes from 1850.

An appeal; - must mean there was previous minutes. Will definitely be interested. Checking it out now.
-
Received Harry's marriage cert. today of 1894 in New Zealand and states his mother was Beatrice Forbes Gray; born in Aberdeenshire. Father 'Harry' Farquharson.
So confirmation of Harry's birth registration of 1855.

Thanks Westee ;D

A bit disappointed with the Parochial Board doc. for Jean/Jane Gray. Have attached all that was written; "608 Jean Gray or Smith. Tarland and Migvie. The board dismissed her complaint".
