Title: Hidden Ancestors
Post by: Gilbert1 on Sunday 15 November 20 10:49 GMT (UK)
I've come to a complete halt with my family tree, and wondered if anyone could give any advice please?
I am really struggling to find the origin of the parents of my 4th G.Grandfather - James Gilbert, (b.1843 Oxford) married Eliza Haynes in Oxford in 1861. (Wire worker/Sieve maker)
His fathers name was given on the banns as John Andrew Gilbert. But John has never appeared on any census records.
No birth records at all for James, nor his brothers John & Henry.
Maria Gilbert (b. 1814-1816), is James' and his brothers mother. No marriage records for her and John Andrew Gilbert.
Maria appears in Census records of 1861, 1871, 1881. Then in she was admitted to Oxford Lunacy Asylum, where she sadly died in 1894. She was a Hawker.
In 1861 Maria is listed as a Widow. So John Andrew Gilbert had died before then.
I would love to find out about John Andrew Gilbert.

Hi Carole, thank you for your reply. The occupation given for John Andrew Gilbert on his sons marriage was wire worker. This is the profession that his son James took on.
Yes that is the right census that you have found. I tried searching for the two ladies Hannah and Elizabeth Gilbert. Looking at their ages I wondered if they were the wives of sons James and John?
As James was married in 1861 to Eliza - could be the Elizabeth on the census. And Hannah maybe married to John - but I cannot find this marriage.

Hannah and Elizabeth Gilbert in 1861 are married women. Someone has drawn lines on the census page linking Hannah to John Gilbert, and Elizabeth to James Gilbert. (James and Eliza Haynes were married 1st quarter 1861)

I had never noticed that before! You have no idea how many times I’ve stared at that record lol  :)
Thank you so much for that, that confirms what my thoughts were. I’ve searched for Hannah and John’s marriage but not found anything
