Title: Amended Request Birth of Margaret Jane Williams in Glamorganshire - around 1840
Post by: Chrissyan on Sunday 15 November 20 19:50 GMT (UK)
I am desperately trying to trace my roots back to Wales and I am hoping someone can help.   :)

My Grandmother x 2 moved to the north east of England during the boom in employment caused by the local iron works. She was Margaret Williams, as was her mother, according to my Grandmother, she also had the middle name Jane, although I haven't seen this on any census etc

I have some records & certificates from the Middlesbrough/Stockton/Darlington area in England, it is the Welsh records I need. I do know that she was born near Bedwellty in Glamorganshire, sadly the town is not recorded. She was born between 1840 and 1843 to Margaret & William who were born around 1817 to 1821. Mother Margaret was born in Llanviger, (Llanfeugan) Brecknock, Breconshire, however I don't know her maiden name.  ::)

Margaret J was single and in England by 1865 where she gave birth to an illegitimate son called Morgan Williams, probably with the second given name as Rees, in Darlington. Margaret's mother is a widow at 54 on the 1871 census, living near Middlesbrough and seems to be living with just with her Grandson Morgan & taking in boarders. Margaret J in the meantime has got married in Darlington to a fellow Welshman (not my ancestor)

I have no record of William ever having left Wales, but the most likely scenario is that the three of them came together and William got work and he died within a few years of arriving

Margaret J was widowed at 34 and married a second Welshman in north east England (according to my Grandmother, she didn't speak English) and gave birth to my Gt Grandfather David Davies who I remember, :) :) he died when I was 6.

If anyone can help me with this I would very, very grateful ;D

In 1871 Morgan is in Normanby, Guisborough.RG10/4855 Folio 33 Page   19

Where is young Margaret in 1871.  Also do you have her on census 1851/61

Thank you for taking the time rosie  :)
I am using Ancestry & don't know how the RG numbers work.

In 1881 she is a widow in South Bank, Middlesbrough at 34 years old & has Morgan back living with her, I believe daughter Elizabeth is in service aged 12  :'(

RG11/4846/83 p 34

I can't find anything definite for 1851 to 1861 I suspect she was in Wales, this is where I come unstuck :'(

I like the look of this one for 1851: HO107/2448/313 p30 but can't be sure its them.

Thanks for looking Jon, it is indeed Morgan, I haven't sent for the birth certificate with him, being born in England, I am not sure it would help me get back to Wales. The only way it might help, is if his Father's name is on it, but I think that is unlikely. He gets married in 1893, I have sent for his marriage cert though, as if nothing else I can add his wife to my tree. :)

UPDATE: Margaret Jane wasn't born nr Bedwellty, she was born in Glamorganshire, no town unfortunately  :-\ The ditto was put in the incorrect place in the census.   ::) This is now in the wrong sub-board  :(
