Post by: wilcoxon on Tuesday 17 November 20 19:42 GMT (UK)
I found a Peter Watt Watson birth registered 1924 Hamilton, is there anyway I can find mothers maiden name as we can do in England and Wales.
I don't find him again until his death in Wales in 1983.
Thanks

I think you will need to actually order the birth certificate -- there is a 100 year closure on the on line images for births in Scotland I'm afraid.

That is a massive clue. I know more recent records are difficult so thanks for that. :)

Not seeing an obvious source of the surname Gartshore so far.

I think this is Margaret in 1891 with family:

James M Watt 30 stonemason b. Hamilton
Elizabeth Watt 33 b. Riggend, Lanarkshire
Maggie Watt 5 b. Hamilton
Janet Watt 3 b. Hamilton
Elizabeth Watt 1 b. Fauldhouse, Linlitghowshire

Address: Woodside Cottage, Fauldhouse, Whitburn, West Lothian

Parents James Mitchell Watt and Elizabeth Graham married in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire in 1885.

From family trees mentioned, they show that Peter and brother George had a half sister, Elizabeth, born in Hamilton in 1907. There is a birth reg showing on SP which shows an Elizabeth GARTS (word too long for index...likely Gartshore?) Watt born in Hamilton in 1907. This Elizabeth is also showing as having died in Hamilton in 1973.

Playing around with the index for 1911 seems to show this Watt household in Hamilton:

James 52
Maggie 24
Lizzie 22
Lizzie 3

The 1885 marriage in New Monkland for James Watt and Elizabeth Graham would let you confirm parents' names. Margaret Gartshore Watt looks to be first born to them. So, wondering if the name used was connected to Elizabeth Graham.

There is this 1857 birth showing for an Elizabeth Graham www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ91-LJD

It fits well with that 1891 entry for Elizabeth now Watt. Riggend, which she gave as her birth place that year, is a village in New Monkland.

Easy enough for the 1885 marriage to be checked on SP.

Elizabeth Graham or Watt was the daughter of James Graham (1830-1895) and Margaret Smellie Gartshore (1835-1883). I am certain that she is related to me (very distantly) at least once and possibly twice over through her mother's line but I cannot find the clinching pieces of evidence.

Her husband's parents were Peter Watt and Janet Fleming.

They're not normally all that difficult because if you can get to the Scotland's People Centre or a linked archive you can search using mother's maiden surname from 1929 onwards, and view the certificate at the click of a mouse. However these facilites are currently closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Incidentally, if anyone comes across the death record of James Mitchell Watt, I'd be interested as I have failed to find it so far.

I have him in the 1911 census, and he is not listed as deceased on the marriage certificates of his daughters Margaret (1920) or Janet (1922).

His wife Elizabeth Graham died in 1894, and is noted as deceased in 1920 but not in 1922.

Thanks, Rosie.

I did wonder about that one but as I hadn't seen any other reference to Lockhart I couldn't be sure.

I'll note it to check the original some time when I can get back to Edinburgh or another Scotland's People Centre.
