Hi,
I cannot find 1911 census record for William Evans, born Dolgellau/Dolgelly in 1879 (born William Brown, as his Mother and Father hadn’t married before he was born); and his wife Nellie Jane Evans, (born Nellie Jane Gates in Small Heath, Birmingham). William was on all census returns since his birth until 1901 in Henllan, when he had moved to Wolverhampton, Staffs, and was working as a Railway Engine Fireman. He married Nellie in Rhyl, Wales in 1905, on the same day as his sister Laura Evans….however that is all I can find on him. I cannot find anything more for either Nellie or William in the 1911 census returns, at home or abroad – I’ve tried searching under the surnames Brown Evans, Evans and even Brown on its own – tried looking for Nellie and also Ellen, however the birth records state her name was Nellie!! Any help would be most appreciated.

Nellie was b Wolverhampton 1876 per freebmd
Do you know the names of any of their children?

That fits the probable 1901 Census entry.

Hi,
I know nothing about them as a couple/after they got married. I have found all other relevant info, prior to them marrying but they just seem to have disappeared after they wed. There were a couple of possibilities however wrong places of birth etc. I've even tried to see if Nellie died prior to 1911 but nothing.
Thanks for taking a look :)

Thought I may be able to trace children using GRO online and mmn Gates. Unfortunately there were at least 2 more Evans/Gates marriages in roughly the same timescale

Aw, bless you for looking - its so frustrating - I even did a search on FindMyPast for any Evan's in the whole of the UK whose Mother's maiden name was Gates - There were a few possibilities prior to 1911, in little pockets from Wales through to the Wirral, but unfortunately, couldn't find them on any 1911 censuses or it was another Evans entirely as their father AAAGH! Driving me mad atm lol

They've moved quite a way by 1911!

Take a bow Mabel - very well done👏👏

Maybe they're badly transcribed elsewhere.
I looked for a Nellie b Wolverhampton c1876 married to William, and on Ancestry she was top of the list for 1911!

Fairly sure I have found the family on 1939 back in Wales - using the surname Brown

Have found has GWR staff record - gives dob as 14 Nov 1879
Mostly in Wolverhampton in the early years, made up to fireman in 1907 when he moves to Stourbridge, the on to Cornwall in 1908. 1925 sees him move to Aberystwyth. Retired on his 60th birthday
Includes his disciplinary record - there was one incident when he unnecessarily left his engine unattended, went to a signal box an managed to accidentally shoot the signalman with an automatic pistol he;d been handed by the victim, assuming it was empty!

Have just checked the 1939 and you are right. Living in Cardiganshire and same birthdate as his staff record

Oh thank you so much Mabel!! Thats brilliant! I had earmarked Cornwall for further scrutiny as one of her brothers was listed as living at St Austell and I vaguely recall a birth of a child being in Cornwall, (Truro maybe) - Thank you so very much for your help! Only another three unaccounted children to search for now lol X ;D

Are the GWR records available to view on a specific site? x

Why do you think they would use the Brown surname instead of the Evans? The only reason I ask is that, although it was his registered name, on every school register, census return, even when he was an adult, (1901 census), he used the name Evans - a newspaper report of his marriage was the only time I'd seen him recorded as W Brown Evans! Plus, he named his child Evans??
