Title: TIGNOR family in Virginia
Post by: TicknerV on Thursday 19 November 20 11:24 GMT (UK)
I am looking for people who have researched the TIGNOR family in Virginia, U.S.A., particularly ones who have looked into William TIGNOR (d.1656/57 Lancaster County, Virginia).

At the bottom of each RootsChat page in the brown area is a section called "surname interests" - it might be a good idea to post your information there and then anyone coming along at a later date might see your interest.

from http://sites.rootsweb.com/~tnalhn/dew3.htm

Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Lancaster County, Record Book No. 2, 1637-1660:

you might find the Abstracts themselves somewhere on line, so you'd have the original source.

PS - I just Googled Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Lancaster County, and found a few hits.

Thank you, the 2 of you who have responded. I have seen a fair bit of this information on William Tignor (d. 1656/57). My main aim is to establish when he first came to Virginia before 1650. He seems to have married Mabel, and had his son, William, by about 1640. I then want to try to establish from whence he came. It could have been from another American colony, but I suspect it was more probably from South-East England or London, where the surname was more probably written as TICKNOR/ TYCKENOR or other variants.

Finding a reliable answer is probably going to come down to finding someone at a genealogy society in Virginia who can put their hand on an article about William Ticknor/Tignor in an old journal.

--------------------
There are a few sites with information about William online. Some say he was the son of a Sir Thomas William Tignor of Sussex, England, who died in Northumberland, Virginia in 1656. Thomas is said to be the husband of Alice Gaill. But did father and son died the same year? Or are they looking at the death of William (husband of Mabel)?

Another site says that a Thomas Tigner owned land in Northumberland County in 1640. But they say that man died in 1713. If they have him confused with his possible grandfather, then maybe Wm's father was named Thomas and did come to the colonies.

Or do both of these people think that William's name was Thomas William?

------------
I found the abstracts for Lancaster County for 1652-1655 and there was no mention of a Thomas Tigner. William shows up 1 to 4 times:

Wm Tignor. Certificate for land for transportation of 6 persons into this colony. 6 April 1653. p 43

[what does this imply? who were the 6 people and where did they come from? is there any way to find out?]

Mr Tigner to pay levy on 5 tytheables to Mr Jno Cox. 24 Oct 1653. page 93

Mr Tignall, to pay levy on 7 tytheables to Mr Jno Cox. 6 Feb 1654/5. page 174

Mr Tignoll. to pay levy on 8 tytheables to Wm Leech. 7 Dec 1655. p 236

[John Cox was a/the justice in Lancaster County from at least April 1653 to December 1655.

-----------
If you end up not finding some earlier authentic research and you have to do it yourself, I would ask myself these questions to work back to England:

1. When is the earliest sighting of William Tignor in Virginia, and where?
2. Who else was in that area at that time? When did they arrive, and does anyone know what part of England they came from?
3. What boat did they come on and where did it leave from?
4. Did he marry in America and was his son William born there? If not, are there matching records in England?

-----------
Sorry not to be of any more help. I'm a little more familiar with New England records, since my wife's families were pretty early settlers there, but I know next to nothing about Virginia. So once again, I'd advise getting in touch with a genealogy society that covers Lancaster County and see what they can tell you.

Dear all,

My effort to reply to ohio person seemed to get knocked out by the entry of the post from someone trying to contact Sandra. I will try again below.

My aim is to establish perimeters for the birth and marriage of William Tigner (d.1656/57) (so far first located in Virginia records in 1650 by on south side of Rappahannock River, but apparently already having been there for sometime) in order to search for appropriate origins for him, probably in South-East England.

1. If I understand it correctly there are not records of birth/baptism or marriage of people in Virginia before 1652, but there are death, land and probate records from that date; is that correct? If so is there a definitive death record for William Tignor in 1656/57, probably in Lancaster county, which might give his age at death, or a gravestone that might give his age at death?

2. Are there records of the 90 single women brought in to Virginia in 1619 to help populate the settlement. Were there any Mabels amongst them?

3. Did people come from other American colonies to Virginia between 1607 and 1650?

4. I understand that Coldham has done a lot of work on indentured settlers into Virginia over the 1607 to 1660 period, but have not had any chance to consult these during lock-down, but wonder if William Tignor (d1656/57) was amongst them before 1650.

5. Where can one access boat records of people coming to Virginia over the 1607 to 1650 period, particularly before 1640?

John TICKNOR settled in Scituate in Massachusetts in 1646, reputedly coming from Tenterden in Kent, England, having been baptised there in 1633.

Most of these TICKNOR/TICHENOUR/TIGNOR name variants were living in Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Berkshire and London in South-East England at this point in time.

regards,

Vincent
