I have obtained this post card and I need to find out if it is Arthur Mansell born 1885.
Would there be any navy records for him please. Alan
-
If it is Arthur Mansell he died in 1966.
-
Where was he born?
-
Water Orton
-
If it is him he married in August 1914 in Water Orton

Water Orton

Was he the son of Thomas & Lydia and married Lily?
-
Yes that is him. Its strange because the person that gave me the post card had a list of his family and next to his name he had married Lily Watts. I did say how do you make out he married Lily Watts because it was Lily Dawes, but he never gave me an answer. I have Lily dying in 1972. I couldn't find them in the 1939 register. Because I wanted her DOB. I do have the Parish register for their marriage. Alan
-
I do have her DOB now it is 23/12/1888 parents William and Louisa Warner. Not sure where I got that from.

There are living in Birmingham Warwickshire 1939, her year of birth 1889, her death 1888
Lily Mansell Age: 83
Birth Date: 23 Dec 1888
-
I do have the Parish register for their marriage.
So you will know that he was an engineer at that time. I can't see a navy record for him.
-
I have just put my other computer on and yes I got the DOB from the death. On his marriage it says soldier. Can you just wait a minute while I type you a message.
-
The reason I put the post card on here to find out if this is Arthur is because I have a family photo with the same person on and someone had named that person as Richard born 1880 his brother who died on the railway in 1902 and Arthur being younger as the one sat next to him. Which all was going well until I got this post card. Alan
-
This is suppose to be Arthur. Before I got the post card and that all made sense. The thing is there isn't another A Mansell that it could be.

From the postcard address of A Mansell HMS Ganges
snippet from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ganges_(shore_establishment)
HMS Ganges was a training ship and later stone frigate of the Royal Navy.
She was established as a boys' training establishment in 1865, and was based aboard a number of hulks before moving ashore.
She was based alternately in Falmouth, Harwich (from 1899) and Shotley (from 1905)

That group photo I was led to believe taken between 1896 and 1897 from left to right back row James born 1883 Annie born 1881 Front row Eliza(George's wife) Richard born 1880, Arthur born 1885 and George born 1874. George and Eliza had their first child in 1898 and she didn't look pregnant in the photo.

Alfred Mansell birth Dec 1891 Worcester MMN Meek. No relation
-
Why would that Alfred be in that family photo. This is certainly Arthur.
-
Searching Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1848-1939

Thank you Lady. John Sydney is one of my relations in fact he is the brother of Alfred that died in 1892. I have him in the census up to and including 1911 in Kent, i have his navy records and he just disappeared. Alan
-
Looking at the postcard, it seems clear that "A Mansell HMS Ganges" has been added later - it's a completely different hand from the birthday inscription. Mistaken identity?
-
Shaun I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have just been on the phone to my fourth cousin who identified the family photo and we had agreed that the post card must be a red hearing and that isn't Arthur's name on the back. In fact it isn't Arthur's picture on the front but it is Richard.
-
Is this Richard’s death? Fatal - runover during shunting operations
Richard Mansell, Platelayer
Date of accident 16 Dec 1902
Station: Water Orton
-
Yes Lady that is him.
-
I only have these photos of when Richard and Arthur were small but can't tell what they would look like when they were older. Which is a pity it would solve the problem. Alan
-
There are no Royal Navy records to be found for a Richard Mansell born circa 1880.
-
Yes thanks Shaun. I was wondering about that during the night. I have decided not to go by any of those photos now and just use the younger ones because I can't be sure who they are. Actually there is someone that would have known the family that I am going to speak to on Monday but unfortunately she is blind. I will ask her about the photo anyway. Alan
-
i have just been told this post card was in an autograph book next to this page.
-
I think I now know who he is. Arthur Thomas Mansell birth reg June qtr 1897 Aston 6d375 mmn Spiers.
He married Violet Furley in 1923 Kent
I have his DOB, baptism, all the census's including 1939 and his date of death.
So there must be navy records for him.
Alan

Yes that is his DOB. :) :) :) :) :)

Before the date of that postcard, Arthur Thomas Mansell had already served with the Royal Naval Division in France and the Mediterranean and had been twice wounded. His RNVR record confirms that he was assigned to Ganges in September 1917.

Thank you both for all your help. Alan
