Title: Emigration - Watson Family of Sussex
Post by: Tall Al on Saturday 21 November 20 14:42 GMT (UK)
Hi,

My brick wall relates to two brothers and a sister who I feel may have emigrated.

The last entries I can find for all 3 family members are in the 1851 England Census in Westham, Sussex and because a family member later emigration to Illinois in 1881, I wondered if perhaps the following may have been trailblazers for others to follow?

I am looking for Edwin Watson (baptized 7 April 1833); John Andrew Watson (baptized 1 June 1834); and Sarah Ann Watson (baptized 5 August 1838). They were all born in Westham, Sussex.
Their parents were John Watson (1804-1887) and Charlotte Foord (1804-1888).

Thomas Patrick Watson (1860- 1933) whose father was their brother Alfred John Watson (born 1832), emigrated in 1881 and died in Alabama in 1933.  He married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in 1885.

I have looked at familysearch.org and there are entries which seem possible but I would appreciate any information that may show if they did indeed emigrate - There is no sign of any of them after 1851 in England.

Many thanks for  looking

Alan

Hi Sandra,

That is an interesting article - I have struggled to find out what happened to Sarah Elizabeth Watson (1858) but it seems she may have married William A Liddington.

Can you shed any more light on this?

Hi Sandra

It now appears from census information that Sarah initially married Alfred Tudell on 19 May 1874 and in c1892 re-married William A Liddington.

Appears to be lots of children from first marriage.

Hi Sandra,

Thank you - lots to investigate. Sarah's death showing "Fred" Watson as her father I expect refers to Alfred Tudell, as her real father Edwin died sometime between 1860 and 1870.

I wondered if you had any idea of the death of Nellie May Bough (nee Watson) after her husband Frank's death in 1910

Alan

If the youngest child, Nellie, was born 1865, then Edwin died between 1864-1870.

You won't find a death record for Edwin. You will need either an obit or funeral home/cemetery record for death date.

The Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871 destroyed all county vital records prior to that date.

Hi,

I think I have narrowed down Edwin's death in Chicago in that whilst the 1865 census does not show names, there is an entry for Ed Watson  and next door is Sarah's father and family Wm Linton. This situation also applied in the 1860 census. So it seems he was alive in July 1865

I wondered if it was possible that the City directories has Edwin listed between 1865 and 1870?

Free Sites
A number of directories have been scanned and made available online for free in collections like Google Books and Archive.org. Some examples are linked below.

1839 | 1844 | 1846 | 1855 | 1856 | 1863 | 1866 | 1867 | 1869-1870 | 1870 | 1871 | 1871 | 1875 | 1875-1876 | 1880 | 1885 | 1887 | 1892 | 1900 | 1902 | 1910 | 1911 | 1928-1929

Note: The 1928-1929 directory linked above is arranged by address; a corresponding directory arranged by name is also available. This reverse directory is particularly useful because it lists wives' names.

Hi Sandra,

Many thanks for the link to the directories - very useful.

Edwin appeared in the 1863 directory and was still with us in the 1865 census. By the time of the 1866 directory he was not mentioned. Just to be sure I will check later directories but it appears he died 1865/1866.

Hi Sandra,

Just wanted to update you and thank you for your help which has allowed me to produce a family tree for Edwin Watson following his emigration to the USA.

I still have things to find however if it not too much of an imposition, can I seek your help to look at the following on my behalf -

1) Sylvia Cecile Maud Trudell (born Canada 1888) married Lewis T Kollwitz and by 1910 had one son. The parents divorced 1912/13 and she re-married in 1915 to Frank Frederick Fifer (1878-1920). He subsequently re-married a Rosy White in 1918. I have no idea what happened to Sylvia - she may have re-married again to Frederick Kroell in 1922 but can you find her or her death?
2) Julia F Liddington born 1903, I think married an Alexander B Kaminski in 1923 - no trace of them afterwards.
3)You have kindly provided information on Nellie May Watson born 1865 who married Frank Bough I cannot find her after her husband died in 1910. Any ideas? Their son Edwin Frank Bough (born 1881, died 1924) had remarried an Emma born in Sweden in 1886 - any idea who she was or when they married?

I will keep looking myself but the records i have access to are fairly limited.

Many thanks again for all your help

Alan

Never had any luck with Nellie May Watson/Bough after she was arrested in reply 10.

Interestingly there was a Nettie May Kimbrough born 1883 noted on the 1903 marriage with Edwin and then again on 1 marriage 1st April 1920 Kane, Illinois to Leroy Cannon. Nettie had same parents listed each time but was born Illinois not Sweden.  If that was Emma, she may have left Edwin and returned to Illinois  :-\ ???

Hi Sandra,

Once again many thanks  - i am lost for words.

The Palmateer connection is interesting  - Mable Palmateer married William I Trudell in 1908 - his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Watson and now we have Edward Palmateer having married Edwin F Bough's widow (Emma Swangren) - Edwins mother being Sarah's sister Nellie May Watson.

Both Palmateers came from Kansas so assume they are brother/sister.

A complex web indeed

Hi Sandra,

I have found a marriage between Elmer Warner Ford and Julia Lilian Luddington 13 July 1926 at Cook, Illinois. Age for Julia is right. As she was first married at age 20 (see your earlier post) I am thinking she married Alexander B Kaminski in 1923 and then Elmer in 1926.
Elmer died in 1935 and is buried at Lake Village Cemetery Indiana (findagrave.com). The questions are is this the right family and what happened to Julia post 1935?

Thought it may be interesting to show Emma Palmateer and Jenny Nilsson's mother's probate showing her children in USA. Most of the family had moved over:

Hi Sandra,

Just wanted to update you regarding Julia Liddington - you may recall you found her in the 1930 census as the wife of Elmer Ford. I have now found that after Elmer's death in 1935 she married Zaner Mahmet in 1937 and died in 1955 at Hammond Lake, Indiana. In turn her husband Zaner died in 1963.

I also found the death of Nellie May Bough (nee Watson) in Hammond on 13 Feb 1903.

Still more to find but at least the brick walls "are crumbling"

Hi Sandra,

Thank you for the additional details. I am intrigued by the obituary for Julia Mahmet (nee Liddington) which says 3 sisters - I can explain and have already found 2 - Mrs Steve Tate, and Mrs Harry Edwards (Nellie M Liddington and Mathilde Liddington respectively) but am at a loss about Mrs William Shaffer of Gary.

Julia had a half sister Sylvia Cecila Maud Trudell born 1888 in Canada, from her mothers first marriage to Alfred Trudell, but the last I knew she had married a Frank Fifer in 1915 (he died 1920) and previously a Louis Kollwitz. In 1940 she was a widow (housekeeper) using the name Sylvia Kollwitz.

Alan

PS - Just found her death as Sylvia Shaffer 13 July 1963  - buried at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, Lake County but not found a marriage.

Hi Sandra,

Its been a while but I thought I would revisit this as I have still no definitive information on Sarah Ann Watson (1838) nor John Andrew Watson (1834).

A quick look on family search has revealed the following for 1870 census in Chicago -

Sarah Watson age 31 born England
Sarah Watson age 12 born Illinois
Edwin Watson age 7 born Illinois
Nellie Watson age 5 born Illinois

The names appear to link to the correct family and I was wondering what you thought. Looks like it might be worth following up?

I think Edwin (Herbert) Watson died 12 Nov 1884  age 21 - Rose Hill Cemetery is mentioned but have gone no further

Hi Sandra,

A bit of clutching at straws here by me I think!

Just realised these are the "original" Edwins; wife and children and not belonging to his sister.
