not sure if this is the right place to post. We are trying to find out how 2 people in our tree who married in July 1945 met. It all seems shrouded in a bit of mystery. He was a Canterbury lad and was wounded out of the army in Feb 44 at Monte Casino. We have sent off for his military record which we hope will tell us something about what happened to him before he was invalided out. She had been in the Land Army with Sir Robert Black at Midgham. However, her marriage cert has her at Chuffs House and the 1945 Electoral Roll shows her there with Lady Felicity Millais. I don't know how to find if anyone else was there. in 1939 the residents were a retired colonial gentleman and household.
How can I find out what Chuffs was being used for in 1945?
Is there any way of finding out what happened to him after he left the army?
Is there any way of finding out when she left the Land Army? She was pregnant when she married.

He and wife came back into country at start of 1939, heading for Chuffs, died elsewhere in 1953.
He was a younger son of James John Trevor Lawrence Sir 2nd Baronet, according to lots of trees on Ancestry. (just trying to see what happened during the war to them).

The electoral registers show two more residents at Chuffs House in 1945, a Kathleen R Wall and possibly the lady you are looking for Nellie F. G.

Presumably the marriage cert is blank against "occupation" for the bride?. What about the groom - and address?
Chuffs is a very impressive looking pile - set in six acres. The Times, 29 Dec 1942, carried an ad. that referred to the "recent" sale of "Chuffs, Holyport, Berks" by Estate Agents Messrs F L Mercer -but the only sale I can spot is 1936.

Interesting question, and appreciate that I cannot supply the answer, but there is a redacted entry between entry 1 and entry 2 of the household, so who knows how many.

When I was looking through a local paper at house sales, often the name of the house was not mentioned, and the description is just 'close to xxx', and 5 miles from xxx gives you quite a few houses.
However, to an estate agent trying to sell their services, 1936 is close to 1942?

That's how I read it - part of selling themselves as estate agents. Chuffs was just one of many recently sold properties listed in the '42 ad under a property for sale..
It's an impressive looking Georgian mansion and certainly a candidate for requisitioning during the war for "official" use. I found the pic' by googling "chuff house money row green"

There is a book by a Holyport resident called 'Beyond the Village Green' - her name was Mabel Coppins. The Heritage Centre may well have a copy of it - Maidenhead Library certainly does, but it is closed at the moment. It might have something in it since she wrote about her own personal experiences and memories of Holyport.
I do know that there were American airman in the area during the war but I can't find where they were billetted.
