Post by: Jack TT on Thursday 26 November 20 18:36 GMT (UK)
Trying to find any WW1 details about Albert Miller. I have a number of 7816566, this is from paperwork dated 1924.Also mentions Dragoons.
He was born in 1893/4,
He joined up in July 1912 in London
He has the 1914 star, BWM and Victory medals.
if possible his original army number?? please

You are probably already aware that over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz.  Those that survived are available on the various subscription sites but Alberts is not found

The 7 digit number was introduced around August 1920 therefore his records would be held by the MOD (Available to NOK for a fee). The 4070 no as a result of Ancestry search of MIC and Medal Rolls

7816566 was in a block allocated to the Machine Gun Corps according to https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/new-british-army-numbers-issued-in-1920/

7816566 isn't in the Ministry of Defence listings of records held for servicemen born before 1901.

Perhaps you could post a scan of the document(s) you have.

Do you have his medals?

Thanks Guys.
I don't have the medals,so can't check the numbers.
I have attached a scan of documents, at the risk of major embarrassment, I hope I have not missed anything obvious :) :).
The gentleman in question is the grandfather of a friend, who has the docs, but no other details of earlier service

Hi
Findmypast has Royal Tank Corps enlistments 1919 to 1934
There is an Albert Miller 7816566 born 1894 with mother Annie, resident Nunhead.
Regiment to last posted 5th Dragoons. There is a little more info too.

Well that is definitely him, and it confirms that he came from the Machine Gun Corps (which is also mentioned on his discharge certificate "M G C Cavalry").

I think he could be the Albert Miller who served in 1st Dragoon Guards (7005) and transferred to the MGC (Cavalry) in 1917 (100473).

Albert Miller 7816566 was discharged to Reserve in 1920 which could explain why his service record is not listed by the MoD.

Thank you Shaun and Cath,
based on what is there , i think that he is the 7005 soldier.
Once again thank you all for your time spent on this request.
