Title: Dodgeson and Hutchinson - Northumberland
Post by: rebeccareardon on Sunday 06 December 20 04:09 GMT (UK)
Looking for any further details on a
Timothy Dodgeson (1787-1841) born and died at Newcastle-upon-Tyne
married
Anne Frances Hutchinson (c1791-1861) born Harnton Hall Northumberland

I think they had 9 children - Elizabeth (1813), Anne (1815), Timothy (1818), Mary (1821), Margaret (1826), Thomas (1828), Edward (1830), James (1832) and William (1833) - My direct ancestor is Mary

Look for any further info on them including their parents, occupations and on Mary etc.

I'm having trouble finding this family at all.  :-\

Maybe it's just me, but I can't see any DODGESON (or similar) deaths in 1841. Do you have them in the 1841 and 1851 census? Did Mary stay in Newcastle? Who did she marry?

Modified to add:
Ok, found some records now, DODGSON:

There is a Timothy DODGSON baptised 30 Dec 1787 at Newcastle Upon Tyne, father Timothy, and another Timothy DODGSON baptised 25 Dec 1790 also father Timothy. Are you sure yours was born 1787?

Of possible interest:
"Yesterday sen'night, Timothy Dodgson, aged 47, overman of High Heaton Colliery, Northumberland, was unfortunately crushed to death by a stone falling upon him from the roof of the mine.
The stone was so massive that the colliers were under the necessity of blasting it with gunpowder, before they could obtain the body."
The Times, Saturday,  Sept. 7, 1816

Hi Maddys52,
I don't have timothys or Ann's exact birth death so it could be wrong. I have it that they both married on 23 Nov 1812.
For their daughter Mary I only have a christening date of 28 July 1822  at Longbenton, Newcastle upon Tyne. Mary married George  Coxon and around 1843 and they emigrated to Australia in 1957.

Hi,

Something is amiss.  Please check ... cannot possibly have arrived in Australia as late as 1957 if married in 1812.

You have posted on several boards mentioning 1957.  Likely it is a typo.

Most likely 1857  ;)

This looks like the family in 1851 at [?] Lime St Newcastle upon Tyne:
Ann DODGSON   (widow)   60
Edward (son)                       21
James (son)                         19
Margaret YATES                  18  (servant)
Ann CROWN                         9  (visitor)

And in 1841 at Lime St Newcastle upon Tyne:
Ann DODGSON  45  (not born in county)
Mary                    15
Thomas               13
Edward                11
James                   7
HO107/846 pg 22

Modified to add: looking at the image again I think it says Ann was born in Scotland

Possible birth for Timothy Dodgson

EDIT. i think the 25 Dec 1790 baptism found by Maddy in Reply #1 is the correct one, and fits with age on marriage.

From information in the census we suppose Ann (Hutchinson) Dodgson was born about 1791 in Northumberland. According to the OP and various transcripts of the 1861 census, her place of birth might be Harnton MILL or Harnton HALL or Hampton HILL  - I cannot find any of these.
I think it is more likely to be ‘mill’,  rather than a ‘hill’ or a ‘hall’. I wonder if someone with access to the original census page might see what it looks more like.
The most likely mills I can find would be Haughton Mill (near Barrasford) or Halton Mill (near Corbridge)

Here is a snip of the 1861, I agree - it looks like Harnton Mill

Oh, I can't attach on a lookup request, but it does look like "Mill"

The 1841 census definitely shows born Scotland, so perhaps the place is very close to the border?

There is Heaton Mill near Crookham, which must be close to the border.

I can't see any reference to Harnton Mill, there is  a mention of a "Harnton Hill" in 1886 (a bankrupt butcher "lately of Gateshead ..., now of Hope-street Harnton Hill"  :-\

There is Heaton mill near Crookham in the north east, near the border.
