Title: Warwickshire and Shropshire Milita
Post by: ericthepenguin1 on Monday 07 December 20 14:56 GMT (UK)
Hi

My Great x 4 Grandfather was a Richard Hickman, who I believe was born Birmingham, 1766.

I have who I think is him being married. The parish records state:

6/4/1799 • Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Extract from Midlothian Parish Records - 1799 Banns/Marriage in Canongate, Edinburgh.Text: Hickman, Richard, serjint in the Shropeshire Malitia, and Maria Gibson, daughter of Robert Gibson, coachman in Musselburgh 06 Apr 1799 Book: Register of Marriages.

Now I have discharge papers for a Sgt Richard Hickman from the Warwickshire militia. They show service between 22/2/1800 and 14/11/1825. If memory serves i do think they were up in Edinburgh at the start of the 19th century.  The discharge papers also said he had been a corporal for 4 years 10 days and then a Searjeant for 20 years 100 days

So I need to know, if a soildier of the Militia got married whilst on a 'tour of duty'and then his original unit were posted elsewhere could he get transferred to another unit that was remaining in the area? If so would the fact that he was a Corporal in his new unit be evidence that, to stay, he had to take a demotion? Also as he was a Corporal would that confirm he had to have come from another military unit? Any help gratefully received. I cannot find a suitable death record for him a tthe moment but i guess that may be for another day!

Many thanks

Eric

No, that's not what happened.  He didn't transfer between units.

You'll see from the records that he was enlisted in 1800 at the age of 34 and served only with the Warwickshire militia. In addition to his service as corporal and sergeant he served 1 year and 2 days as a private.

He was a button maker according to the army record and there is a Richard Hickman, aged 75, a button maker, in the 1841 census in Hull.

Hi Shaun

Yes i see that now.

So I guess the question  is where do i find information pertaining to my Richard Hickams service with the Shropshire Militia? Is there any possibility he could have left the Shropshire Militia and rejoined as a private, for whatever reason?

Regards

Eric

Richard Hickman of the Warwickshire Militia, admitted to pension in 1825, resident of Hull, died on 17 July 1846 per this pension record

Other records show that his pensionable service was 24 years and 4 months - which was presumably his time as an NCO with the Warwickshire militia. So if he did have prior service with another regiment, he kept quiet about it.

I haven't found a record of the Warwickshire militia being in Scotland in 1799-1800. When and where were your man's children born?

It looks like he settled in Inveresk and Musselburgh doesn't it.

Is there a second marriage in 1812 to Mary Pearson? Any occupation shown on that one?

Hi Shaun

I see it from FindMyPast Scotland Marriages 1561-1910. It was 1/11/1812 but nothing concerning his occupation. I have emailed a site called Soldiers of Shropshire to see if they can give me any further information.

Thanks for your help. I will have to delete the discharge papers from my Richard Hickmans records, pity, but happy you put me on the straight and narrow. Its just a coincidence I guess but my families surname is 'Aston' and 'Aston' is the area of Birmingham some of the family originates from, (and where, per the discharge records, state Richard Hickman came from).

Regards

Eric

I think the one in the Warwickshire militia married in Sculcoates (Hull) in 1806. They were stationed in Hull for three years before moving to Sunderland in 1807.
