Hi,
I am seeking information about Mary Ann Knight who married John Huddy Retallack at Ladock, Cornwall, on 7 October 1826. I have a lot of ancestor info on John, but Mary is a mystery. She is shown as 'My An Knight' in the England Marriages.
Thanks.
-
Have you found her on a census? Where & when was she born?
-
The marriage record says both bride and groom were of this parish (Ladock)
Witnesses were Walter Puckey and Selina Puckey
Added : looks like the Puckeys are related through the Retallack side of the family.
-
There is a Mary Ann NIGHT (illegitimate) baptised 1809 in Ladock, mother Mary Night.
I have not yet found a death for your Mary Ann. She is still alive in 1871 census, in Truro with her son. It might be her death in Falmouth Union in 1886??
However, the census says she was born in St Stephen, so this might not be her.
But, I found NO other birth records that would fit for Mary Ann. St Stephen is only about 5 miles from Ladock.
John Huddy Retallack (illegitimate) born 1806 in Ladock, mother Catherine
John Huddy Retallack died 1865 in Ladock age 61.
-
Mary NIGHT also had 2 other illegitimate children that I could find:
James NIGHT baptised Ladock 1796
Susannah KNIGHT baptised Ladock 1799
Mary KNIGHT (I assume the same one), died 1849 in Ladock age 82 ( therefore born about 1767)
Note the surname spelling tends to vary.

Walter Puckey was the parish clerk of Ladock at the time and witnessed many marriages.
Walter Puckey married Ursula Retallack 1790 Ladock (witnesses were members of the Huddy family)

A bit more detail:
Mary Ann NIGHT (illegitimate) baptised 25 Sept 1809 in Ladock, mother Mary.
Mary KNIGHT (the mother) burial 22 May 1849 in Ladock age 82 (therefore born about 1767, but cannot find a birth for her)
Mary NIGHT also had 2 other illegitimate children that I could find:
James NIGHT baptised Ladock 7 Oct 1796 (also says born St Stephen in census)
• Married Grace STANNAWAY in St Michael Penkevil 1821
• 1841 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQBS-RBZ
• 1851 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKF-ZKB
• 1861 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7CL-CDK
Susannah KNIGHT baptised Ladock 26 Dec 1799; (also says from St Stephen on her marriage) died before 1851 census?
• Married John HENWOOD in Newlyn East 1820
• 1841 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQB3-2WQ

Children of John Huddy RETALLACK and Mary Ann KNIGHT
The family lived / farmed at “Higher Trelassick”
• Catherine Huddy RETALLACK baptised 4 Jan 1829; Married to James STAPLE in 1852 Ladock
• Mary RETALLACK 1830
• Daniel RETALLACK 1831; emigrated to Australia in 1856
Bit of a gap here - so may be missing a child/ children that died as infant
• James RETALLACK 1838; married to “Phoebe” (1871 census with 3 children)
• John RETALLACK 1841
• Charles RETALLACK 1843 married to Catherine HOOPER in 1866 Ladock
• William RETALLACK 1846
• Cornelius RETALLACK 1849 ; married to Emma CORNICK in 1869; died 1874 Truro age 25
1841 Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQBM-LFB
1851 Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKN-XZW

1871 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFJ8-Y7G
In 1871 Mary Ann, the mother, is with the family of her son Cornelius. He dies in 1874 and Emma, his widow, remarries. I don’t know where mother Mary Ann goes to. I cannot see her in 1881 census.
I can see 2 possible deaths: 1883 in Redruth (age 73) or 1886 in Falmouth (age 75) – but it is possible that neither is right.

Yes, Walter Puckey married Ursula Retallack but probably witnessed the marriage because he was parish clerk. It was common practice. His burial in 1847 notes that he was parish clerk for 53 years.

Thanks, Trish.
Catherine Bele and Francis Retallack are my direct ancestors.
Catherine 14 October 1774 is my direct ancestor Catherine Retallack. She had an illegitimate son, John Huddy Retallack, to her cousin Daniel Huddy (Junior). Daniel was born 15 Sep 1766.
Sarah 6 July 1777, is Catherine's sister, who also had an illegitimate son, James Huddy Retallack, to her cousin Daniel Huddy Junior. Daniel's will names both boys as his sons.
I have a lot of info on those generations of Huddy and Retallack, but I hit a brick wall with Mary Anne Knight wife of John Huddy Retallack. As you will see revealed elsewhere on this thread, she too was illegitimate and her name had spelling variation of 'Night'. :o
