Title: Northing(e) parish
Post by: david standley on Sunday 13 December 20 14:13 GMT (UK)
Please does anyone recognise this parish. I am trying to trace the birth of a William davies for my friend. We have his relation in the 1851 census in Royton, Lancs. His age gives a birth year of 1793 and this is confirmed by his death record. That census says that he was born in Cheshire, Northing(e).

We have his marriage to Betty Law in 1814 in Royton and the births of all his children but nothing appears to help. I cannot find Northing(e) in any Cheshire gazeteer. Does anyone have any ideas please?

His children's names were Thomas, Nancy, Ellin, Maerty Ann, James and John.

I can't definitely place Northinge in Cheshire, but the 1841 census does confirm that William was not born in Lancashire.

I agree the e/tick is suspect.

I have thought of Northwich or Norton or Northen but I cannot find any William Davies baptisms in those places.

Could it be as 'devious' as "nothing". ie no place given!

Probably Northen, as it is on the Lancashire boundary.

Probably Northen, as it is on the Lancashire boundary.

I was just about to suggest that - pronounced in a local accent.

Thanks everyone. I shall try and see if I can find a William Davies born in or near Northen in about 1793.

Hi.

I have found William Davis baptised in October 1792 in Northen to single parent Rebeccah. It looks like a good starting point.

Thanks for your help.
