Title: Fleming Family tree
Post by: Daltonator86 on Monday 14 December 20 16:27 GMT (UK)
Hello, I have an ancestor by the name of Ann Fleming, who was born around the mid-1780s in Mayfield, Sussex (at least that is what the Census gives us). The only two sources surrounding her are the 1841 & 1851 Censuses. In both cases, she is living in the Tunbridge area and is married to Edward Powell (who apparently was born in Wales). In the 1841 record, both of them have put a large 'N' on the box for 'no' concerning if they were born in Kent or not. She is apparently 55 years old at the time (which would mean she would have been born in 1785-86). However, in the 1851 Census it seems to more specific, in that it lists her as being born in Mayfield although she is 68 years old here (meaning a birthday of 1782-83). Either way I can't find any birth records on a particular Ann Fleming born in Mayfield. I am curious about this ancestor because 'Fleming' in of itself is an interesting surname of Scottish/Flemish origin.....

Sorry  but how do you know her maiden name of Fleming if in 1841 & 1851 censuses she is married to a Powell?

PS might be a good idea to change the title of this query to Ann Fleming.

For reference
1841 HO107; Pce: 463; Folio: 30; Page: 20
1851 HO107; Piece: 1614; Folio: 213; Page: 6

ADDED: Have found an entry in Pallot's Index for a marriage of Edward Powell to Ann Fleming in 1807 in Tonbridge.
ANd a baptism

In the 1841 census ages for over 15 year olds were rounded down to the nearest five years.
So she could quite possibly have been aged 58 at the time of that census, but, because of rounding down, entered as 55.

You are in luck.

There is one Ann Flemming bap. Mayfield in the 1780's to Thomas & Martha Flemming on 22 July 1782.

This is the only occurrence of the Fleming/Flemming name in the parish in the 1780's.

Ah, right! Thank you.... That seems likely...
Concerning her maiden name the only source I actually have is the marriage certificate from 1807 in Tunbridge....
