Hi
I am having trouble finding the marriage and birth of Samuel Sansum and Deborah. They had their son John baptised on 5th June 1744 at Dursley, Gloucestershire.
Now John was a Tailor, (he witnessed a marriage Bond in 1768, showing his occupation). This information was found on the Gloucestershire Archive website. On the same website you will see 2 Wills for a 'John Sansum', one 1732, (Occupation Weaver), and another 1749 (Occupation clothworker), both in Avening. It may be just coincidence but all 3 John Sansums are in the clothes trade, so is there a link here?
Thanks for reading this post.
Regards
Eric

There are a number of SANSUM marriages by Licence/Bond on the Forest of Dean Family History website.
The Will of John SANSOM of Avening dated 1748 - mentions, his wife, Susannah, Sons, John, Richard and Samuel. etc. His Grandson Son, son his Son, Samuel. Also a daughter Elizabeth.

Apologies and thanks for the alert - I'd checked out Sansums last night after reading your post but hadn't intended to post any reply. This morning I've been scratching my head re. the apparent disappearance of several posts I've been heavily involved in elsewhere.. This is a very, very senior moment!! Will delete offending items.
Re the Sansums I was puzzled by timing of these baptisms (FindMyPast - transcripts only) -
Sarah Sansom, 22 April 1744, place Avening, parents John and Deborah
John Sansom, 5 Jun 1744, place Dursley, parents John and Deborah
Also, from memory, did I see the name Sansum (bride) married around 1738 at Dursley where both groom and bride were described as "foreigners"?

John Samsom 05 Jun 1744 is on FreeREG and Sarah 1744 also.
John married Deborah EARL 24 Jul 1743 Avening.

Hi
The parents of John baptised 5th June 1744, Dursley are Samuell Sansom, (Sansum), and Deborah per Ancestry.com, record set 'England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975'
Thanks
Eric

Hi Eric.
Ok have looked at Anc records and there are 2.
9th June, Fathers Samuel with a question mark and the image actually says 5th June and another 5 June Father John.
I think a correction has been made and records rewritten out by a different person.
The entry immediately above both of those records is for a Joseph Grove*.
I think that your John 1744 has parents John/Deborah nee Earle-e
Trish :)

Many thanks people for all the information. That explains why i could not find a marriage for a Samuell Sansom!!! At the start i thought there was a Sansum link between Dursley and Avening. I have just got to work out if the John Sansum Wills of 1732 and 1749 at Avening are in my direct line.

I am glad I could help.
Looking at the images cleared it up to me.
There was a Samuel around but his Wife was Rebecca
Marriage;
02 Sep 1743 Kingswood (Wotton)
Rebeccah SOMMERS
Samuel SANSOM
Before 1780, Nailsworth depended on a series of tracks to bring it into contact with places as far as Tetbury, six miles to the southeast, and Dursley, five miles to the southwest. Tetbury was the second most important market town in the Stroud region and like Horsley, Avening, and Minchinhampton, was located in Longtree Hundred. Dursley was located at the center of the lower cloth-manufacturing district of the county, near the Vale of Berkeley.
John/Deborah married Avening but seem to have bapt children Avening and Dursley;
Sarah 1744 (age not given at bapt so may have been born before marriage)
John 1744
Thomas 1752 Avening abode as Nailsworth***
Deborah 1761
May be other children but that all I could find on FreeREG

I was puzzled by the timing of the John and Sarah Sansombaptisms in 1744 - within 2 months of each other and separate locations - parents John and Deborah.
.
I had a look at Ancestry (keep forgetting it's available via library link under Covid) which revealed -
1) 22 Apr 1743, Sarah dau. of John and Deborah Sansom, Avening (image/transcript)
2) 22 Apr 1744, Sarah dau. of John and Deborah Sansom, Avening (transcript only)
3) 22 April 1745, Sarah dau. of John and Deborah Sansom (Avening (image/transcript)
Looking at the images "3)" above should read 1743. It appears on page 27 - clearly headed 1742 and 1743 appears after 4 entries (begins April - the old calendar). Page 28 following is clearly headed 1744.
But "2)" above cannot be explained given absence of image.

Hi
Has anyone had a search for the birth of a John Sansum, (Deborah's husband). I can't see anything myself. There are 3 John Sansum/Samson Wills in Avening. This could be quite a difficult job I think.

Eric

PS - I have found a Baptism for a John Sansome at North Nibley by Dursley 1711 on Anc.
-
RE the Wills 1732/1749;
Burial;
St Mary, Avening
JOHN Sansom 03 Feb 1732/3, Husband of Susannah
Marriages same Church for JOHN Sansum/Sansom;
27 May 1710 to Susanna BERNARD
20 Oct 1722 to Susanna KING

Anc. has the baptisms of (image/transcript - date as transcribed)
1) John Sansom, 13 Jan 1725/6 (old calendar), Avening, parents John and Ann
2) John Sansom, 15 Jan 1725/26 (old calendar), Avening, parents John and Ann
3) John Sansom, 2 Sep 1721, Avening, parents Thomas and Ann
Looking at the image of "2)" above it looks like "13" - incorrectly transcribed
-
As I am not a member of FindMyPast.com I cannot see the records but there is a marriage recorded on the Phillimore mariage registers and Boyds marriage Index for a John Sansum at Avenbury in 1710
-
I was drawn to the John Sansom, bap, 2 Sep 1721, parents Thomas and Ann - given that John and Deborah named one child Thomas (1752).
Beverston Marriages - Phillimores - as transcribed.
Thomas Sanssum and Ann ______?, both of Aveninge, 28 Apr 1718
FindMyPast have transcribed without a bride's surname but the image (Phillimores) shows
"Thomas Sanssum and Ann[ ? Arends] ... "
