Title: Peebles Scrapyard on Southside of Glasgow. Also Mary Fox the Florist in Glasgow.
Post by: Wilton Endeavour on Thursday 17 December 20 13:43 GMT (UK)
Just wondering if anyone has any old photographs or information on the above two premises. I believe the scrapyard was owned by Victor Fox. Victor was born 1891 in Gallowgate, Glasgow and died 1954 in Buchanan Street, Glasgow. As I am working on the Fox family tree from Glasgow on behalf of a friend.
Or if anyone has any information on the Florist's Shop that was ran by Mary Fox in Glasgow. I'm afraid I do not know it's location. But in the 1881 Census. It has Peter Fox, age 50, Confectioner and Florist, born Ireland. Peter's Wife was Elizabeth, age 40. And their Daughter, Mary Fox, age 18, who is a Florist. Elizabeth and Mary were born Glasgow.

Yours,

Hi
Advert for staff Daily Record 27 Nov 1944...
"Apply or write to Mary Fox Ltd., Florists and Decorators, 194. London Road, Glasgow."

Also a couple of small mentions in the newspapers, in 1931 the address was 194 and 196 London Road, Glasgow.

If you can get access to British Newspaper Archives there are a couple of small pieces ypu might find interesting for Mary Fox, a piece where she went to New York on mothers day and was "embarrassed" to be the only person without a buttonhole.
Also an advert which gives another address for one of her shops as 312-4 Argyle Street, Glasgow (the shop in London Road being the main shop).

This one looks to be in Buchanan Street from the 1960s.

The family may know of this as a granchild is quoted talking about Mary Fox here www.britishpathe.com/video/king-opens-scottish-exhibition-aka-empire-exhibiti (top link when search results come up).

For Victor Fox, the Valuation Rolls, 1920 has a Victor Fox, tenant, at YARD 16 MARKET STREET EAST, Glasgow. Wondering if this could be the scrap yard?

From what I have seen on a family tree on A/try, Victor and wife Bridget lived in the general area of Calton Street through this period after their marriage? www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/67798980/person/30553249689/facts

Thanks Monica,
I found the photo of the flower shop on Ancestry. I also have an Ancestry account. So I have been looking at the various family members. But if anyone wishes to keep contributing to this thread. They are quite welcome to do so.

My MiL worked at the Buchanan St shop in the 60s. Finished her floristry apprenticeship there.  Apparently Mary was quite a firecracker. She almost fell out of her chair when I showed her the picture.
