Title: Floodgate or Flood Gate (a place)
Post by: The Geneal Geologist on Tuesday 29 December 20 13:09 GMT (UK)
Any suggestions from a married woman in 1851 Yorkshire who gives her POB as Flood Gate, Shropshire? Not listed today as a town or village

Just putting a link to the census (F M P)

Is she born in the county of Shropshire in the 1841 census?

Does she appear on the 1861 census?

Knowing her name and 1851 census reference details may help.

This looks like 1841 census from F M P, where it is stated that she is born in county:

Not so straightforward. Her family were mobile.
She was born Sarah NORBURY around 1780, but baptised in Cheshire at Church Lawton later that year. Married a man from Heckmondwike, Yorkshire in 1802 Liverpool, William POPPLEWELL, a woollen manufacture and lived in Batley. YKS.
Died 1854, so no further confirmation on POB.
Learned not to trust 1841. Says "yes".

There are several children baptised at Church Lawton to William and Sarah Norbury, perhaps she was mistaken in her belief that she was born in Shropshire?

Unless I've found the wrong marriage -

24 October 1802, by Licence - Christ Church, Liverpool

John Popplewell of the parish of Burstill, Yorkshire, Clothier and Sarah Norbury, spinster of Liverpool.

Added:  Family Search have Sarah from Burstill - BUT I was looking at the original parish register entry.

Just looked - she is in more than 70 trees in Ancestry.

Surely it means that she was 'of Liverpool' when she married, not original birthplace?

You mentioned They were mobile. I'm wondering whether They travelled on the Canal's. There's a Floodgate Street in Birmingham, right next to the Canal

Yes, of course, and John was of Burstill at the time of the marriage.  :)

Burstill is Birstall, the parish that includes Heckmondwike & Batley.
The family were living in Liverpool or she was working there at the time of her marriage.
Church Lawton is in the SE part of Cheshire that immediately abuts Staffs & North Shropshire, so would be in keeping with a nearby Shropshire location. The nearby canal is a possible association with a flood gate. There could have been a flood gate at Church Lawton.
It was just a punt. I don't think we'll make anything more of this unless something appears on a map.

Yes, the Birth Place could actually be a Local Place Name at Church Lawton, maybe the above Link Refers.

The Geneologist Website has the 1839 Tithe Maps for Church Lawton, and shows a Farm House, named Floodgate. It is sited to the East of Lawton Hall, and the Red Bull Inn. Could be the Birth Home of Sarah Norbury.

You can see the map at https://maps.cheshireeast.gov.uk/tithemaps/

On the search screen click on 'search tithe maps by plot' and then enter 'Floodgates' in the box.

Click on the results box and you'll be taken to the exact spot (you'll need to zoom out a little to see it in full).
