Milly (seated) born 1859 & Martha born 1869 were sisters to “Edwin in Sydney” - my last post.
The photo is in not bad condition, but would it be possible for any restoration to make Martha’s faded face a little clearer?
I am trying to make sense of the date. According to the newspapers, Tosca studio was at this Queen Street address from March 1896 to June 1900. It is odd that Martha is not wearing a wedding ring however, as she married in 1891. Both women are wearing very heavy, dark clothes – is it possible they are dressed in mourning? Milly’s teenage son, Walter died after falling from his horse in June 1897.
Thanks for your comments.

your jpeg has 0kb. that is ZERO kb, so no picture
why not upload it to Rootschat in the normal fashion ?, cheers, Ian :-\

In the meantime. what type of sleeves do they have?
These are quite distinctive markers in the 1890s.

If you repost the image, you will need to rename the file, just add an X

Another try to upload - thanks for your help.

They are wearing the fashion of the era and there dresses could be any dark colour, I would suggest a date of mid-late 1890s.

brilliant treatment on the eyes Tomkin, here's my try, cheers, Ian

It almost looks like she has lost two fingers but they are probably bent over.

Thanks Tomkin and Ian. Those faces are much clearer and detailed now Tomkin - thank you again.
Carol, I think the fingers are just relaxed back into the palm of the hand.

My try. :)
I was wondering whether she was pointing at the other lady's ring finger. And, is it at all feasible that she could have removed her own ring(s) in order to focus attention on that other lady? (Otherwise it seems to convey the impression that "I'm not married".) [Added a further thought: it's hard to see but could that be her own ring at the end of her little finger?]

Thanks Peter and Japeflakes; the faces are much clearer and detailed. Just what I was hoping would be possible. I love your work.
I don’t think I will get too hung up on the missing wedding ring and the shape of Martha’s hand. :)

Thank you for your wonderful work Carol and John. I am enjoying see all the detail revealed in the lovely restores that have been posted.
My sister just reminded me that our grandmother used to have a fan similar to the one Milly is holding, and as small children we were told off for hitting it like a little drum. :D
Happy New Year to all. It was a very quiet start to 2021 here.

Happy New Year to you too, hope we can do more photos for you :D

I hope so too, I am just wary of posting too often and taking up your precious time.
I am slowly working my way through our “historic albums”, and making digital copies of everything. A slow process, but valuable. I am now looking with greater detail and appreciation (and questions), at the photos which I had looked at before.
