I was reading in an old newspaper extract that one of my relative was found dead in a Throolet in Church St Port Glasgow. Can some tell me what a Throolet is.
Thanks Rob

I’m not sure what t means but I would guess it’s a close, like an alley, cut through, ginnel etc.
Each dialect has their own name for it.

Is it Throughlet described here?

Rob, is this the entry you have found on the Intimations 1901-1909 database (www.inverclyde.gov.uk ).
Francis Devine, labourer, died at Mrs. Cupples, the Throolet, Church Street, Port Glasgow on 25th March 1901 (Greenock Telegraph 25.3.1901, Port Glasgow Express 29.3.1901)
Wonder whether it was a house/building name from the way it is written up? Have you found Mrs Cupples in the 1901 census? Added: have had a look for a Mrs Cupples in 1901 on Church Street but not seeing anything that fits so far :-\

I wonder if this is Mrs Cupples, on the 1905 Valuation Rolls on SP:
ELIZABETH CUPPLES
WIDOW
Tenant Occupier
HOUSE 33 CHURCH ST
PORT GLASGOW
1905
This may be Mrs Cupples in 1901:
Elizabeth Cupples 50 head b. Ireland
Mary Jane Devine 24 boarder b. Port Glasgow
Agnes Devine 42 boarder b. Port Glasgow
Adam Farr 28 Ship Yard Lab boarder b. Port Glasgow
David Devine 1 boarder b. Port Glasgow
Address: 26 Lyons Lane, Port Glasgow
Have you looked at Francis Devine's death registration on SP to see what it shows?

Hi MonicaL, Yes its the very same Mrs Cupples. His death certificate says Throughlet (spelt differently to the paper) Close, Church St Port Glasgow. The correct on his death certificate has the address as 26 (something) I can make it out. But have attached it.

Confused me! He died at Throughlet Close, Church Street or 26 Lyons Lane?
From google and someone's research - http://web.ncf.ca/cv297/Hugh.pdf - on a different line, I found this mention:
Throughlet Close near S side Church St, next to Fore St & King St
Just helps in locating better where it was.

26 Lyons Lane is where Mrs Cupples shows in 1901. Were the Devine boarders connected to Francis?

Greenock Telegraph, 3 Feb 1870
" ... a report by Inspector Sloan on the state of the close leading from Church street to Lyons Lane, known as the "throughlet" ..."
-
Monica, Yes, They are related. Agnes was the sister of Francis. Mary Jane was the daughter of Agnes and David was the son of Mary Jane.
-
Hanes Teula, That makes perfect sense now. Thank you.

From Monica's reply #8:
