Hi looking for help to find my Great G grandfather and family on the 1871 census as I am having no joy. This is what I know:
William Knapper (1830 Kidsgrove) married Jane Jackson (1839 Ireland) some time in 1865 possibly in Hanley Stafford
According to the 1881 census they had two children there, Mary (1866) and Christina (1867) before moving to Manchester where the rest of the family were born Jane (1874) and James Joseph (1878).
And if he could be found on the 1861 (age 30) census that would also be brilliant however, William as far as I can see is not the offspring of George Knapper and Sarah Garter although this seems to be a common mistake on Ancestry.co.uk because there are so many Knapper's in Staffordshire
Hoping you can help and thanks in advance

In 1871 Jane JACKSON was Mary JACKSON's daughter in law.
Jane, Mary, Christina and William Jnr. JACKSON and Mary JACKSON are in Ancoats in 1871. 'In law' could have various meanings at that time, she may have been a step daughter. Jane is enumerated as 'married', but it looks like Christina was illegitimate.
JACKSON, CHRISTINA

Thank you both, Debra that is really interesting and Jamjar thank you for your link. When we are allowed travel again I hope to be able to get access to these records and solve the mystery of the surname, Jane Jackson should be Mary Jackson's daughter however in going back to the 1881 record I now see that Mary Jackson is shown too be the Mother not Mother in Law lol now I am confused . .
The William and Ellen are not the ones I am looking for. In the 1881 census William is born in Harecastle, which is on the outskirts of Kidsgrove, 1891 says Kidsgrove. As the two eldest girls were born in Hanley that was where I was looking.
Thanks for opening up a new avenue to search
