Title: John & Sarah FOSTER of HUNSLET, YORKSHIRE
Post by: Webby on Monday 11 January 21 01:19 GMT (UK)
Hi List,  looking for a marriage of the above couple.  1841 Census they are (BIC) and 1851 Census both born in Hunslet - (the same for their kids).

The information on a death for a Frederick Foster in Australia in 1903 has his parents as being John Foster & Fanny Greenwood* (*Fanny or Frances was the name of his wife's mother - Frances Hawkins/Dixon/Dickson - but it's the Greenwood name that might hold a clue......could it have been Sarah Greenwood?).  I cannot find any marriages in Hunslet for that time frame (eg 1810-1814?).

The first child Mary Foster was baptised in 1815 at St Mary's in Hunslet, and as both John & Sarah said they were born in Hunslet....I'm assuming they married there?.

Would anyone know if there is marriage information for that time still available for Hunslet or not please.

Kind regards

I've just done a quick check -

FindMyPast don't have any BT's for St Mary, Hunslet marriages
Ancestry marriage records for St Mary, Hunslet start 1837.

However, my WYAS Collection Guide states that St Mary, Hunslet marriages start 1717.

Hi BumbleB

There was some marriages for early 1700's to 1750's I think on the Dusty Docs, but nothing after that date.

Not sure what the WYAS collection is?

It's starting to look as though they might not exist or would St Mary's Church (has the church survived?) hold any registers?

WYAS is the West Yorkshire Archive Service - they say that they have at Leeds - Collection Reference RDP44 - baptisms 1686-1988, marriages - 1717-1977, burials 1615-1854 and banns 1960-1989.

Good morning, Webby.
Only the tower of St Mary's survives. The rest of the Church was demolished before 1975.
Stefan.

Hi Stefan

Thanks for that info...well that answers my question on whether the church would hold any records!!. :(

I've written to the WYAS asking whether they hold the marriages for that time or not.  Waiting to hear back.

The church had records there and held services there up till about 5 years ago but it shut down in the last two years and now has iron railings round it. Very sad. My great granddad fell through that whilst climbing it as a child, so the story goes.

The Leeds Library hold records for the church but is shut due to lockdown.

Afternoon everyone, it's been a couple of years and I'm still trying to track down some information about this couple...especially their marriage.

Well, I contacted the WYAS once again a couple of months ago to ask them if they had found any of the records I was after (back in 2021) (got a different Archivist this time).  And finding out that at the time (eg 1808-1816 that the marriage I was looking for), Hunslet was a Chapelry of St. Peter's Leeds and are available in the records of St. Peter's Leeds.
(You have to look for them....nearly at the end of some of the records for each year). Also has baptisms & deaths as well. (on Ancestry)

So my post is to let anyone who is interested that the early BDM's for Hunslet are available in the records of St Peter's Leeds - which you can get a look up service from the WYAS or as above, if you have Ancestry they are on there.  And no I still haven't found that marriage anywhere!..still looking.  ???

Cheers
