Title: Death certificate for great grandfather
Post by: Haysteph88 on Monday 11 January 21 10:59 GMT (UK)
I know the potential date of death and cremation date of my great grandfather but do not know the index details such as the vol number or page number, can you still request a death certificate? Thanks

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You can order it on the GRO website but it will be £14

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/app_ew_death_la.asp?APPLICATION_ID=5T6E7381A7IA95C12C794IY4DXYM57C4AXH

Freebmd does have some deaths for 1970, have you looked to see if any of the same surname have been listed or a surname spelt with the first letters the same.  You could then access the register image on the site and see if you could locate it that way.

Dates of birth on death certificates are often unreliable.  They are reliant on the knowledge of the informant.

I can only say what is written in the GRO Index - and we have to remember that the date of birth is o the date submitted by the informant.

Thanks for your help, I may need to try an order a certificate based on the date of death from the GRO website and hope itís right, otherwise it may remain a mystery

If youíre not sure itís the right death, you can access the cremation register at DeceasedOnline.
https://www.deceasedonline.com

You will need to buy credits to see the image of the register, which should give you his address, the name of the person ordering the cremation, and other information that might help identify him. The minimum purchase for credits at DO is £5.00, which is much cheaper than a death certificate.

Often worth spending a few minutes scanning the probate register for the year and the one after. If probate was granted it can often help eliminate some of the entries in the civil registration index.

Keep in mind an event should be registered in the district it occurred which in the case of a death or marriage isn't always the district someone lived in.

It is on Deceased Online - John William Makin of 33 Springwood Street, Ramsbottom.  Age 63, cremated 1st July 1970.

There is another female name whose address is the same as John's.  She may still be alive so don't wish to put it on here.  This was under the heading of Person applying for cremation.  Death registered at Heywood.
