I wonder if anybody could help me with this search as I am trying to find out what I can about this man.
Stanley Carlton was a reasonably well known actor and theatre company manager in the late 1890s and well into the 1900s and in the 1930s he became the manager of the Cinema de Lux in Brighton. He also lived in the Twickenham area about 1918/20.
The problem is that I don't know whether Stanley Carlton was his real name as opposed to a stage name. On the 1911 census he is shown under this name as a married theatrical manager, lodging in Leicestershire with a birth date of 1882 and birthplace Redcar, Yorkshire.
In 1929, he placed a notice in the stage to say that his wife had died on 14 April 1927. Now that notice, I believe refers to Rachel Maud Lawson, born Rachel Mussett in 1868 who did die on that date. She was an actress who went under the stage name of Rubie Maude and she did live with Stanley for a while, although they were never married.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks

I can see him the newspapers in 1900 as Stanley Carlton and around 1901 census seems to be performing in London.
That was a long way of saying I cannot see him in the 1901 census as Stanley Carlton. I tried people born Redcar in London of the right age, but none that I found are theatrical.
-
Is he on the 1939 register?
Do you have a death date for him?
What is your interest in him? Is he an ancestor?
You say - "on the 1911 he is shown as a married theatrical manager" He is not shown as married on the 1911 entry
-
Just going to ask if you have a death for him under that name?
-
Would the death certificate for Rachel have any information - if "Stanley" was the informant it might have another name for him - especially if it said husband.
-
Have you tried contacting Equity? They have records from 1930 onwards, and he would almost certainly have needed an Equity Card to work in British theatre at that time.
-
The 1939 register has 12 entries in Sussex for males born 1881-1883 with an occ of theatr*
You could try checking the names given to see if any match a birth in Guisborough which was the registration district for Redcar

The 1911 census transcript say married, but the actual form says single - thanks for that. There is no reference to Stanley on Rachel's death certificate and I don't have a date of death for him.
-
What is your interest in him? Is he an ancestor?
-
Oh that's a shame he wasn't on the death certificate - who was the informant out of interest if they were living together?
All I can think that might be of use is newspaper clippings but you've already tried that for clues :-\
-
My interest lies with Rachel who worked for his company many times and lived with him for some years, although not married.
-
Was she married to someone else if her birth name was Mussett and she was Lawson or was Lawson a stage name?
When and where did they live together?
Do you have her on any census as I can't find her.
-
She was married first to Arthur Skelton in 1897 and then to Ernest Lawson in 1924. In between times she had a son Jack with Ernest Lawson in 1904. her stage name was Rubie Maude. She is on the 1891 census as Ruby Maude in Lambeth. On the 1901 census she is Ruby M Skelton in Chelsea and on the 1911 census as Ruby Maude Skelton in Twickenham.
She and Stanley Carlton are on the electoral roll for 1919 and 1920 at 225 St margaret's Road Twickenham.
Other than that, Stanley remains a mystery.
-
in the 1930s he became the manager of the Cinema de Lux in Brighton.
Not that it helps your search, but an article in the West Sussex Gazette 24th March 1932 states that he had been dismissed, following a court case involving the cinema.

Just adding a few “bits”
Ruby Maude Mussett married Arthur Woolfield Skelton March qtr 1897 Islington 1b 493
Arthur was b 1874 Brentford so was 6yrs younger than Ruby/Rachel. On his own in Durham in 1901 but with a new “wife” in 1911. Arthur died 1946 Herts
Rubie M Skelton married Ernest G E Lawson June qtr 1924 Brentford 3a 439
Ernest was born 1879 Guisborough so was 11yrs younger than Rubie. He died 1961 Herts
So there is only a 5yr timespan between her marriage to Ernest & her own death in 1929 during which time she appears to have left Ernest for Stanley Carlton

Ernest born Guisborough R.D? That is the same Registration District as Stanley, if he was really born in Redcar.
In the 1891 census Ernest G.E. Lawson is living in Richmond, Surrey with his parents. His place of birth is Coatham, which is part of Redcar.
-
Replying to Carole, Arthur actually died in new Zealand in 1921
So, Jen B are you thinking that Ernest Lawson and Stanley Carlton are one and the same?
-
It just seems a coincidence that both Ernest and Stanley appear to have come from Redcar :-\
Have you got the Ernest Lawson/Rubie Skelton marriage certificate?

Ruby died in 1927. There is an ‘In Memoriam’ in ‘The Stage’ in 1929 which refers to her death in 1927.

Here you are:
The News, 15th February 1935, a long article which begins:
Formerly an actor under the name of Sidney Carlton, Ernest George Earl Lawson, aged 53, since the introduction of ‘talkies’ and a nervous breakdown, set up in business as a confectioner and tobacconist.
He was on trial for obtaining money by fraudulent misrepresentation and was imprisoned for nine months. The shop had been in Fulham.
His wife was bound over for two years.
-
Interesting developments especially the 1928 marriage.
-
Ernesst & Nora are on 1939 war register as "confectioners"

Ernesst & Nora are on 1939 war register as "confectioners"
And by 1960 they appear to be living in Barnet, which is where Ernest's death was registered.
-
Thanks Jen B so Ernest Lawson and Stanley Carlton are one and the same.
I'll look at the article which I couldn't find as it was in the name of Sidney.
Thanks again
-
Nora was Rachel/Rubie's Aunt
-
There is a further long article about the case in the Westminster and Pimlico News, 15th February 1935, which will lead you to the entry in the 1939 register which John mentioned.

Having spent a lot of time on this I was simply curious to know what Ernest’s occupation was on the 1924 certificate?
-
He was an actor
-
abun, it's a great shame not sharing the marriage details, I like JenB & other's really enjoy trying to help with people's requests and sometimes feel that it is not always appreciated when info is unwilling to be shared.

The marriage cert presumably had his fathers name & occupation which may have saved us a lot of time & effort trying to find him on earlier censuses
