Headstone in Nairn cemetery states that Isabella McLennan, aged 73, wife of John McPherson died 18 March 1891 but I can't locate a death record for her on SP.
Could it have been registered but is not indexed on SP?
-
Do you have an image of the headstone?
Is anyone else named on the headstone?
Can you give details of the inscription on the headstone....all the words...to the extent that it is clear enough to read.

The headstone has been placed some time after the 1892 death. There would be at least one of the named people buried there.
"In Memory of" might name people buried in the plot.....or died / buried somewhere else.

Agree with wivenhoe but info. may also be slightly out.
However, there have been a few cases here on RC where a DC was elusive on SP.
Does the age on John's death tally with what you know, could Isabella's age be wrong on her death reg. or indexed wrong?
Did they have children living elsewhere who Isabella may have been visiting & died there?

Add...I did a complete search 1881 - 1900 minus yr, age & maiden name & the closest I could see was for MCPHERSON ISABELLA 70 - 1896 - 123/ 55 Nairn with other surname Grant

The headstone was possibly made using money identified for that use by John McPHERSON, who died 1892.
The headstone might have been placed many years later when those funds were available....and the informant for the date made an error.
At census 1891...do you see John McPHERSON identified as a widower. I think the census would have been conducted in April?
-
John is listed as widower in 1891 at same address that he was living with Isabella at in 1881
Children all pre-deceased them and her age on headstone is consistent with census records
They married 1845 and I also can't find them on 1851 census

Thanks Neale that is helpful
-
Could she have died in England? Were any of her children living there in 1891?
There is a death registered 1891 Northumberland for a Isabella McPherson. Age is not quite right – 80 yrs.
-
Neale, see reply #6
There's absolutely nothing in the whole of Scotland matching what it should.
Maybe an email via their 'contact us' at the bottom of the home page with all the details when they re-open?

Can anyone clearly see the image of the headstone?.
Does the inscription account for all the space available.....or........is there space enough for another inscription, suggesting that, at the time it was placed, the plot is available for another burial?
-
When John died 1892 the informant was son-in-law of half-brother.
John and Bella had a son James baptized 1849 in Inverness but not shown on 1861/1871 census records. No surviving baptism records for their other children
The inscription goes right to foot of headstone
