Captain Tom and his daughter plus her husband and their children were given free flights to Barbados in December.
It did look like a low risk destination, but there was a spike around Christmas and 450 cases in the second half of January.
-
Radio reports have negated the Barbados theory. He only tested positive on Sat/Sunday and he came back from Barbados soon after Christmas.
-
Was his pneumonia mis-diagnosed I wonder?. The last time my wife and I was him on television we remarked he didn't appear to be in the best of health and I think this was not long after his return from Barbados. I am sure we all wish him well and a speedy recovery.
:)

It's not the trip to Barbados that concerns me, but the journey through the airport?
And, maybe, the fellow passengers on the flight?
-
But I think they came back a month ago. It seems a long time for the virus to develop. I assume he was tested earlier when he developed symptoms and only tested positive at the weekend.
The press releases say that he'd had pneumonia for 3 weeks.

Oh how sad - incredible man......... :'( :'(

So very sorry to hear that. I couldn't believe it when it was announced that he'd caught the virus, it's so ironic and so so sad.
-
I've just read about it. So very very sad.
What a great man he was.
-
This news is so very sad but a long life well lived. I was pleased to read that his daughters were allowed to be with him at the end.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.
RIP Captain Sir Tom

Just heard the sad news that he has died RIP Sir Tom :'(
-
Oh no, how very sad.
I was speaking with my son today and we mentioned how as a very young man during the war he rode a motiorcycle through the jungle in Burma ,with messages I believe ,when he would be in his early twenties.
So much money raised and so inspirational.
There will be some recignition at what is allowed at his funeral but there surely must be something more when possible, surely more.
Viktoria.

Good afternoon,
RIP Sir Tom, you were an amazing man.
I took our RBL branch standard out in the garden and dipped in remembrance of you for the two minutes silence.

Very sad news. An inspiration during these difficult times.

Well done John, I am sure something will be done for him later when it is allowed and his family agree

A sad loss; not only for his family but for the entire human race.
A one off. We, quite probably, shall never see the like of him again.
:)
-
So sad, he will be the one shining light that will stand out for us all when this is all over, and we look back over the year we lost our freedom. I hope they release the single "You'll Never Walk Alone" that he sang with Michael Ball in his honour with the proceeds going to the NHS.
I feel a "A Doorstep Clap" on the day of his funeral would allow us all to show our appreciation and respect for his amazing fund raising for the NHS.
Walk on Tom - Respect!

A truly sad moment when I heard of the passing of Captain Sir Tom... he brought the Nation together with his dedication to raising money never in his wildest dreams thinking of the eventual sum he’d raised...
He was an inspiration to us all at one of our darkest times and will ever be remembered...
He certainly had a 100th year that not many could say they’d had... culminating in his Knighthood a fitting outcome for his wonderful efforts...
He was constantly on our local news and it’s wonderful to know he was so highly thought of...
I’m sure it will be a comfort to his family to know what everyone thought of him from far and wide.. very sad that it was covid that was his end...
RIP

This is in the news here in Australia too.
So sad. :'(
I think everyone loved him.
-
Served his Sovereign(s), his country and the people with such dignity and honour for the WHOLE of his life. Rest well, Sir Tom, you deserve it.
-
:'( :'( :'(
-
Treetotal, That is a wonderful idea, wonder how it can be brought about?
Perhaps sales of his record could have a percentage at least going to some worthy cause ,NHS probably in honour of his magnificent effort.
If that is already the case excuse me but they will soar again now I imagine.
What a great loss to the whole country ,indeed the world as his magnificent
effort and achievement is pretty well known world wide I should think.
Viktoria.
-
Captain Tom would say "Tomorrow will be a good day". He's put that optimism in our hearts.
-
I’ve never met Sir Tom so why am I in tears over his passing?
Good night and God bless Sir, we will miss you so.

I found this very sad news.

According to tweet from his daughter he was only admitted to hospital after he had tested positive and had breathing difficulties.
see news report linked on initial post in this thread
-
He tested negative when he was initially admitted, but positive when he was discharged home. He was then re- admitted for help with his breathing.
And so he acquired COVID-19 in hospital. How sad..
Romilly.
-
His family were allowed to be with him and it was stated that he was reminiscing and laughing with them that day - something to be thankful for and a great comfort, I am sure.
-
Good afternoon,
The first report said that he was in hospital with brochitis. So was on a normal medical ward. After testing positive he was kept on that ward and not taken to a covid ward.
I take it from that that he was in a private rm not a multi occupancy rm. That is why his family could be with him.

I hadn't see that he'd actually been in hospital twice - thanks for clarifying. Hospital acquired infection is alarmingly high in some areas

Clapping for Sir Tom at six O’Clock today.
Viktoria.
-
I have lit a candle and will remember Captain Tom for his humour, inspiration, example and courage. What a lovely man.
I will also remember those 100,000 plus people who have died, who will also have led useful, loving lives and will be dearly missed.
-
Well, at least one other couple joined us. :) And I could hear faint clapping in the distance!
-
Three couples near us and some in the distance.

Clapping for Sir Tom at six O’Clock today.
Viktoria.
It is just after 5 a.m. in New South Wales, Australia . Our household are standing together in our kitchen clapping hands. Some of our family were working overseas and are still waiting, nearly a year later, to return home. They are exchanging messages right this moment with us as they are clapping too, we all hope it is 1800 hours there.

I clapped for Sir Tom tonight, a few others on doorsteps and some car horn honking.
I was also clapping for my dear mom who died of Covid last week (she also acquired it in a hospital) :'( :'( :'(
-
Well done Jool. I am so sorry to read of your loss.
-
At 18.01 i was on my doorstep, saw the rear end of a neighbour going in, and that was all, very disappointing but I think it was a bit of a rush, should have given it more publicity and made it a Thursday

I didn't know anything about the clapping until I turned the news on, and by then it was over! What a stupid time to do it and with no warning.
-
Condolences Jools on the loss of your Mother, I am very sorry to hear of this.
I went out to clap. I think I might have been the only one in my street. I did see someone out much further up the street but I don't know if it was for the purpose of clapping.
I also remembered I have a video clip of St Nicholas, Newcastle Church bells ringing on my Kindle so I also played this. (I took this in 2018 after attending the Centenary Remembrance Service and I visited the Cathedral afterwards with my sister in law.)
Well, I think Captain Tom certainly deserves a grand peal of bells. :)
I agree Groom, perhaps there just hasn't been enough publicity or notice given.
-
Here too, someone across the road clapped with me and some further up
too.
On the main road there seemed to be quite a few but there were echoes .
There will be something more when possible.
I know there are many people doing wonderful things ,but his war history, at only just over twenty and then his wonderful effort , well it takes someone very special .
The little boy who walked with his frame is someone suitable to do something in any events to celebrate and remember Sir Tom .
That little boy is very special too.
Viktoria.

Good evening,
I didn't know anything about the clapping until I turned the news on, and by then it was over! What a stupid time to do it and with no warning.
I only found out 10 minutes ago, when I opened up RC. We had demolition gang member no 4 today so daughter could get on with her next OU task. Only got home about 10 past 6 after dropping him back.
Well, I think Captain Tom certainly deserves a grand peal of bells. :)
I agree Groom, perhaps there just hasn't been enough publicity or notice given.
I don't think bell ringing is allowed at the moment. Same as 1st lockdown, churches only open for private prayer. In most churchs I doubt they could socially distance.
My condolences Jool on the loss of your mum.

I too would like to extend my sympathy Jool.
A friend has just found out she has cancer and must go in to hospital ,of course she is dreadfully worried that she will be safe besides the reason to go in, ,diabetic too .
If only those breaking rules and ignoring advice would realise what harm their actions can do !
How old was your Mum?I hope she had a full and interesting life .
I am truly sorry.
Kind regards,Viktoria.
-
Sir Tom, rest gently sweet man. :'(
And rest gently Jool's Mum. :'(

Very sorry to hear about your sad loss, Jools.

This poem was put on a site I use and I think you would like to read it and hopefully we will be able to fight this horrible virus.

Thankyou for posting that, it says so much.
Tell the author “ Well done” he has encapsulated what so many feel.
Viktoria.
P.S. I hope our Poet Laureate writes something too about such a most remarkable man.V

I don't want to take attention away from the original subject of this thread about Captain Tom, but I would like to thank everyone for their kind messages of condolence on the loss of my lovely mom. :-*
Viktoria, in answer to your question, my mom was 77. I hope all goes well for your friend in hospital, such a worry.
-
Jool, just remember the happy times and good memories, no one can take them away
Take care
