Title: Please help with dating this photo of a small family, I think from Illinois
Post by: bytesizesound on Wednesday 03 February 21 05:45 GMT (UK)
Not the greatest resolution, I know, but the original is in a box in a storage unit 300 miles away from its 85-year-old owner; this may be the best I get. I have not enhanced it in any way other than to crop it.

If I could get some help on guessing the age of these folks - and the time period, especially from that distinctive dress on the young mother - I think I can pin down who they were. I have lots of data on the ancestors of the owner of the photo.

Is it significant that I can see a sliver of the dress on the left side of the image?

Thank you for your help.

What you have is an 1870's tintype.
The image is in reverse as are all tintypes.
Below is how they would have been at the sitting.
The sliver of dress is there because the photographer
took more than one photo probably because someone moved
& blurred it.
The plates used could take up to 4 images & were then cut to size.
With regard to ages I would suggest the girls are around 15 & 13
with dad mid 30's.
The woman looks a few years younger & I would say mid 20's which begs
the question is this a 2nd. marriage or maybe she just looks younger than she is.
As an aside early tintypes never gained in popularity in the UK as the process had been
superseded by the albumin print but were extensively used in the USA into the 20th. C.
where they were called ferrotypes.
So I would say you are correct that this is a USA family.

Looking at it again I can't detect a wedding ring so I'm wondering if they are 4 siblings.

So it might be 4 siblings from around 13/14 & up to the mid to late 20's.

Yes, I think you’re right jim1, - of course a married woman would have had her hair up!

This is yet another case - PLEASE write the names, place, dates etc etc on the back of photos. I have a wedding photos of my parents and dont know who half the guests are, nobody left to ask.

I thought the same when I looked at this earlier. The male looks too young to be the father of those younger girls.

They’re a very handsome family.

Lovely image.
