Title: DNA began my quest!
Post by: chrissiecruiser on Wednesday 03 February 21 11:15 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone at RootsChat,
I really didn't know where to post this thread...it could go to many boards!

I did my DNA, no surprises there. It proved all my research.

My daughter is engaged to a lovely Mauri guy who wanted to investigate his family in New Zealand.
Sooo, he did a DNA test and of course it came back with hundreds of  matches etc. He has lots of cousins plus no telly back then!

Since then I have delved more via family search, ancestry, asked questions of his mum and found some unusual names which carried down.
Then he asked if I had found this name, that name....and of course I had!
Putting the drect line together has been exciting! (Too many to do em all just yet)

I went to see them on Tuesday to tell them what I had found and it blew my mind!!!

His DNA came back German, tick, English, tick, Hawaiian, tick, Norfolk Island, tick, Pitcairn Island, tick!!!
He is a descendant of Fletcher Christian!    🥳🍺🍸🍷🤪
(Mutiny on the Bounty fame)

I was a bit overcome.
My daughter didn't know what I was so excited about.
Shall have to educate them both.

Not every day you find out this stuff.   Phew!

Stay well all,
Chris

Wonderful story. DNA is opening so many doors (even those that maybe should stay shut ;) ) I find it fascinating.

That's very interesting.

Have you worked out which of Fletcher's children your future son in law is descended from?

Hello Ruskie,

Yes, Thursday October Christan was the son. Born1790 at Adamstown, Pitcairn Island. Died1831 Papaeete, Tahiti.

Fletcher Christian was his 7th GGrandfather.

Did you already have a paper trail back to Thursday Christian? Or was it the DNA matches that led you to head in that direction?

If you don’t already have a paper trail are you going to make one? You would expect there to plenty of documentation and it would be fascinating to look in to all of that. I bet there are some interesting stories to be found.

Does that mean that your future son in law is related to everyone on Pitcairn and/or Norfolk Island?  ;D

Thanks for your interest Ruskie.

Yes I will track paperwork down, I already have some through family pics, headstones, and ancestry documents.

And yes, it's very exciting!

I am however, stopping ancestry due to lack of cash, so am trying to find what I can through them before finishing.

We will see, maybe son in law will pay for me!

If the information you require is available on the pay sites, maybe you could ask your future son in law to sign up for two free week trials to both Ancestry and Find My Past, then you can use his account to do your investigations. He will need to supply his credit card details to make an account.

Remember to cancel both subscriptions before the trial finishes though or the cost of an annual fee will be taken out of his bank account.

That will give you a couple of extra weeks to do your research. Libraries also have free access to both of those subscription sites.

It sounds like a fun project. Good luck with it.

Awww! Thanks Ruskie,

It has been immensely satisfying so far.
Since my last post, my future sister in law has asked me to trace her german line also, and hubby told me to keep it on!

Yippee!!!

Cheers, Chris

That's good news Chris.

If you are not a German speaker, there are several rootschatters who are if you need help down the track, though the online translators are not bad these days.

Good luck with it.

Thankyou Ruskie,
Will keep that in mind.

Chris,

Am I right in thinking there have been DNA projects testing inhabitants of Norfolk Island (maybe Pitcairn too?) where they discovered that the majority of inhabitants today descend from Fletcher Christian?

If so, it might be worth you chasing up whoever did that testing to see if they are interested in your future son in laws results?

They might even be able to help you with your research.

Thankyou Ruskie,
I didn't know that, but of course so many people would be interested in the whole situation.
I spoke to son in law's mum in NZ yesterday and she agreed with me that many of the descendants did not actually marry. She also said there were marriages/partnerships within close families.
Messy.
DNA would be a godsend to unravel it all.
As with the aboriginals here in Australia, the Kiwis pass stories down through word of mouth.  As names have been relayed to me, I track them down and so far it all agrees.
This also happened with my own tree several times, I'm pleased to say. All proven now!
But thanks, I will find out.
Chris

I think that without the paper trail you might have to resort to guesswork to some extent.

One of the Thursday’s had a recorded 17 children, so how you would ever know which of those your son in law descends from I don’t know. That is complicated in some cases by the lack of surnames (as we know them) and the fact that some had no formal marriage.

I think trying to chase up the DNA project might help you with what sounds like a complex search. I hope I am not giving you false hope suggesting that, but I do recall hearing something about DNA testing of Norfolk/Pitcairn residents some time ago.

Good luck.

I think it's great when people discover descent from 'famous'/'infamous'/royalty etc. but to be able to declare such with no paper trail has me completely baffled.

Do you know which child of Thursday October your future son-in-law is descended from?

I have DNA connections an awful lot closer e.g. 3rd cousins who supposedly descend from common 2 x g g/parents which without the 'matches' having a paper trail (which I have for a few lines), there's no way I can work out who they descend from.

Can you please help us all by explaining how this can be done as far back as 7 x g g/parents without the paper trail as I'd love to know the secret being as I'm stuck on 2 x greats descendants?

Annie

Hello Annie,
Thankyou for your interest, and I realise this line will be hard to follow, but as I said, I still have a lot of work to do.

There may not even be any paperwork in some cases, however I have found headstones, some burial information, spoken to family, plus follow tree lines and names.

My son in law brought up several names when I sat down for a talk this week, all of which I had already found in his line.
He had the stories/lines told to him by his elders.
His mum confirmed it all and gave me more. I am now in touch with an aunt of theirs who has done an extensive tree in NZ.

1. Fletcher married a Tahitian Princess in 1789. (Son In Law knew her name)

2. Thursday October Christian was Fletcher's 1st son, he "married" Susannah Teraura Quintal abt 1805. Quintal is a name which comes up in the line I am doing. More followup.

3. Mary Christian, their daughter "Married" John Buffet 1825. More followup. Tui asked me if I had found the Buffet names.

4. Ephraim Buffet Christian, their son, married Pauline (Polly) Adams in 1864 on Norfolk Island.

5. Their son, Austin Buffet (Ott) Christian married Elisabeth McCoy, Norfolk Island 1896.

6. Their daughter, Elsie May Daisy Christian (whom my son in law knew of) married Stanley Nathaniel Quintal in1917, Norfolk Island.         Her name is also repeated in his line.

7. Their daughter, Iona Irene Quintal married Frederick Jonathon Ellmers (Where Tui's Middle name comes from)in NZ in 1940.             There's that Quintal name again.
Iona is another name being used in this generation.

Their son, Ryan Stanley Ellmers married in NZ.....current grandmother.

The family has helped a lot but that leaves me much to do.

Ruskie has given me another alternate route to follow too, so thanks for that.

Must go for now, toodle!!!

Chris

I think Matthew Quintal was one of the mutineers.  He was murdered on Pitcairn in 1799. So the Quintal names will more than likely be his descendants

Thankyou Shanreagh,

Another piece of the puzzle!

Are you part of it too?

Keep well

Chris

I've enjoyed reading the background as I'd only heard of the names & the connection but had never seen the film.

It's well documented, here's 2 of many links...

Annie,  thankyou so much!

Did you have a look?

I did briefly, will have to go on my desktop when I have a lot of time to take notes.

What a crazy lot of people.   It will take an eternity to sift through them to prove anything.

My son in law's dna proves that he is part of the crew's offspring.
After looking at the articles, it is not clear cut.
As I said, much to do!

Thankyou all for your input.
Hope the info passed down is on track!

Cheers,
Chris
