Hello
Can anyone assist in obtaining 1901 census entry for 'George Hill aged 15 Band Boy Navy Men'.
Would deeply appreciate as he was my grandfather...

That’s great. :)
Now you will be able to further back.

Sadly no... he was born in St Giles Workhouse and raised in Edmonton Workhouse, his mother Mary Hill past away shortly after being moved to Leavesden asylum..1890's. So total brickwall...

Oh that’s sad.
I see her in Leavesden in 1891 - birthplace ‘not known’.
1901 1322/177/26
Shows her born Whitechapel.
That is if is her.

That is her.. usually separated from children once in workhouse..

Yes, she might be with another child in the workhouse before George.
Are there any records for Leavesden?

Heywood
Just have a small reference to her passing away shortly after 1890~91. Could not access any admission records as I am in Scotland and any records London Metropolitan Archives which I don't have access to..

Thanks Jon.
So that isn’t her in Leavesden after all?
-
Hi
No. We have looked at her once before, briefly, and there must have been another Mary Hill there.
This is the Strand register which has their people at Leavesden, and including Mary

Their admissions to the workhouse at Edmonton, in January 1887 comes Mary Hill, George born on the 21st.

He leaves in March 1900, for the Impregnable, as per TNA record

Mary is not in the Strand rough exam book for 1882-88. If she was in some kind of relieving officer's book, it probably hasn't survived.
I fear that all we can do is cast around. Or indulge in mad speculation!
That Strand record for Leavesden patients says that Mary Hill was admitted from P, presumably St Paul (Covent Garden), and we have no sign that they were particularly worried about her settlement, so perhaps try looking there in 1881? :-\
The only likely one is at 18 White Hart Street, St Paul Covent Garden, must be close to the Drury Lane Theatre.
Elizabeth Hill Head Widow 52 Needlewoman
Mary Hill 22 Needlewoman
George Hill 20 Shopman
All born Middlesex London.
Mary and George unmarried, no relationships given, presume are daughter and son.

The 1890 electoral register has a George Edward Hill at 18 White Hart Street, St Paul
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9FL-Q9SF-T
Next year, in the 1891 census, Elizabeth and George appear to be at 31 White Hart Street, and are now in the parish of St Mary le Strand (and later on George Hill is on the electoral registers at 31 WHS)
Elizabeth Hill Head Widow 60, born London St Pancras

Got an ecclesiastical map here! St John Drury Lane is to the north, St Clement Danes to the east.
http://mapco.net/parish/parish09b.htm
So some of White Hart Street would appear to be in St Paul CG, the rest in St Mary le Strand. But it looks like the Hills may have still been at number 18 in St Paul in 1887, when Mary Hill was admitted to the Strand Union workhouse.

Any thoughts on that from Mark? Do you want some more? :-\
