Title: William Reynolds Blogg, born in Suffolk - help finding his family
Post by: WideEyedGirl on Saturday 06 February 21 15:40 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate help with finding the parents of William Reynolds Blogg, who may be from Suffolk.
Here's the information that I have for him already.

According to the 1841 census, William (written as W.R.Blogg, transcribed as U.R.Blogg) was not born in the county of Norfolk (Heigham). According to the 1851 census, he was born in Laxfield in Suffolk. Either way, he was born about 1788, but I can't seem to find a baptism record for him around this time in Suffolk.

On 5th October 1809 at St Andrew, Norwich, Norfolk, William (said to be a bachelor of the parish) married Hannah Maria Martin (spinster of the parish) by License. It was witnessed by a possible relation of William Reynolds Blogg - Sarah Blogg.

William seems to have been a haberdasher, and was living in Heigham in Norfolk in 1841 and 1851. In 1851, William's occupation is 'servant register office'. I have not found his death record yet, or censuses after 1851.

William Reynolds Blogg and Hannah Maria Martin had several children in Norfolk; these are the ones I have found so far -
- William Blogg (b.1810)
- Emma Blogg (b.1812)
- Edwin Martin Blogg (b.1814)
- Frederick Samuel Blogg (1817-1868)
- Ellen Sarah Blogg (b.1824)

Many thanks for any help,
Holly

Possible death for William in Dec 1852 Norwich age 65.  That would fit with 63 in 1851.

As for his parents have you looked for a Blogg/Reynolds marriage in case that was his mothers name?

I did wonder if Reynolds was his mother's name, although I have been unable to find a Blogg-Reynolds marriage for the 20 years before his birth (until 1788) in Suffolk.

Thank you for this, I can view the basic transcript on Ancestry but it doesn't say his age, just 'William Blogg, Oct-Nov-Dec 1852', therefore it was difficult to be sure it was the right man.

And thank you for this detail, I had a FindmyPast subscription probably over a year ago but I never knew there were newspapers on there.

I've just looked on Google maps as I don't know the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk at all, and I can see how the names could be confused. I'll definitely have a look down this route now, thank you very much :)

When you look for deaths on the GRO index ages are given for all which is a great help.

There was a Samuel Blogg farming in Laxfield around the time of William's birth. Samuel's lease on arable and pasture land was due to expire at Old Michaelmas 1788 (Ipswich Journal, 13 August 1785).

There was a Samuel Blogg b. 1786 in Laxfield and farming in Creeting St Olave, Suffolk at the time of the 1851 census. His 1852 will is available in Norfolk Record Office - as is that of Blogg, Samuel, the elder, farmer, of Creeting St Olives, Suffolk, drawn up in 1831. Could he be William's father? Both wills should be accessible through FamilySearch.

The elder: 1831; NCC will register Hart 323
The 'younger': 1852; NCC will register Latten 817

Hope this helps.

Just seen through a FindMyPast search that there's a 1778 marriage entry for Samuel Blogge and Mary Grimsby in Laxfield in the Suffolk Marriage Index.

And this is probably William's mother d. 1834. She mentions William and lots of family details.

NCC will register Harrowing 419
Blogg, Mary, widow, of Creeting St Olives, Suffolk

Still doesn't explain the Reynolds though ...

Wow thank you for all this information. Lots for me to look into.

Where you have left the Will references, how do I use these to access the wills?
Are they available on FindMyPast or FamilySearch?

I wonder if the Reynolds name could be from a grandmother? I have seen that before. Other times, I've found families that are definitely correct, but there seems no explanation for the unusual middle name. My 3x great grandmother was called Sevilla, and no one in the family ever had that name. It's still the only instance that I've seen the name.

It's a good thing you asked because I've just realised I missed the date off Mary's will - it's actually in the 1835 volume.

You can access all the wills on FamilySearch. This may not be the most efficient way, but I go Search>Catalogue>[keyword: Norfolk]>Probate records>Norwich Consistory wills (quite a way down the catalogue list)>[select the year, so 1834-35 for Mary].

Once you open the file, you're looking for the folio number at the end of the reference, so in this case 419. Normally you could just enter this number in the image search but you may need to do some calculations depending how many volumes are in the file (the names in these references indicate the first will in the volume). In this file there's more than one volume (an 1834 and an 1835 one), so I just calculated where I thought the 1835 one would start and added 419 to it. The folio numbers are in the top right-hand corner of the manuscript so it's easy to check where you are if you toggle the images using the tools on the right.

You're right it could be from a grandmother - though it's strange none of the other family members seem to have it. I've just had a look on FindMyPast and there's a 1733 marriage between a John Reynolds and Sarah Grimsby in Ubbeston, which is the next village to Laxfield - worth a look!

The location might be....Creeling St Olaves......increases the options for newspaper archive searches.

Here's the missing piece in the original jigsaw:

Reynolds, John, gentleman, of Laxfield, Suffolk
NCC will register Whitesides 439

- lots to process!

By the way, the will references are all from the NRO catalogue
http://nrocatalogue.norfolk.gov.uk

There are plenty of Grimsby wills in there too.

Thank you for all this, and the explanation of how to find the wills! I have found and saved the wills of Mary Blogg, and Samuel Blogg (elder and younger).

Could I just ask, what is the year of the Will for John Reynolds, gentleman of Laxfield, Sussex?  And is this the same John Reynolds as the one in the marriage to Sarah Grimsby in Ubbeston in 1733?

(NCC will register

It's either the same John Reynolds or his son. Whichever way, he's definitely related to Mary.

Using the wills in this thread, I've managed to piece together a little family tree.

Samuel Blogg senior (farmer of 208 acres at Creeting St Olaves), died 8 Feb 1831, aged 84 yrs.
Samuel married Mary Grimsby (d.1834) in 1778 in Laxfield, Suffolk.

Samuel and Mary had several children, including Sarah, John, Samuel, William and Lucy.
These names are all from the wills but I can't seem to find any baptism records for these children. The child William could be my William Reynolds Blogg but there's no way to prove it at the moment  ???

Hi Holly

The Suffolk FHS has transcribed the baptisms of these children of Samuel and Mary Blogg at Laxfield (Hoxne Deanery (https://suffolkfhs.co.uk/shop/index.php/hoxne-deanery-1754-1812-bpi-12-p2-1.html)):

1786 Feb. 7 Samuel
1787 June 14 William Reynolds
1788 Aug. 31 John
1790 Nov. 28 Sarah Dorothy (born 26 Oct.)
1791 Oct. 30 Ann
1794 April 25 Ebden (private baptism; since died)

Mary's maiden name, Grimsby, is given in all but the 1786 entry.

Ann was buried at Laxfield on 13 Nov. 1791 and Ebden on 27 Oct. 1794.

Thank you both for this information, it looks like Sarah married William Norman of 'Mondham in Norfolk' and they had 3 children; Elinor (born 1816), Frederick (b.1818) and Ann Hester (b.1820). Sarah died aged 31yrs in 1822.

The sibling called Lucy is referenced in one of the wills - she married Thomas Arnold on 4th June 1818 at Creeting St Mary, Suffolk.

Is it usual for Suffolk baptisms to not be on such sites as Ancestry/Familysearch? I've never had to search the county before.
I've tried looking for the baptisms of Samuel Blogg (senior) born about 1747, and his wife Mary Grimsby, who died in 1834. I've been unable to locate them, which makes linking John Reynolds to the family much harder. John Reynolds describes Mary Grimsby (wife of Samuel Blogg) as his kinswoman, so they must be related in some way - possibly through John Reynolds's wife Sarah Grimsby.

Parish registers from the north-eastern part of Suffolk (Lothingland Deanery) held by the Norfolk Record Office can be accessed free of charge at FamilySearch.org (https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index?owc=https://www.familysearch.org/service/cds/recapi/collections/1416598/waypoints). The Suffolk Record Office's digitization project (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=689451.msg6843706#msg6843706) is currently "on hold" so we don't know when or how it will make images available online.

FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/) transcripts now exceed 300,000 Suffolk records.

Findmypast has much of the Suffolk Family History Society's data, though often without some of the useful transcribed details. Downloads or CDs can be purchased from the Society and there is also a search service (https://suffolkfhs.co.uk/index.php/pages/view/search-services), including parishes not yet published, but coverage is still incomplete, particularly for the early registers.

FamilySearch has indexed images from Thorpe St Andrew (alias Thorpe-next-Norwich, Bishop's Thorpe or Thorpe Episcopi) in Norfolk, where Samuel BLOGG of Creeting, Suffolk, was buried on 13 Feb. 1831 aged "84" (entry 320 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6X5G-RY?i=21&cc=1416598&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AJ8ZY-HZF)) and possibly baptized on 5 March 1754, a son of Samuel and Anne, having been born in "1749" (image 19 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6X5R-H1?i=18&cc=1416598&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3ANT63-445)). Samuel BLOGG married "Anna" [possibly the Latin form of Anne] EBDEN at Hethel, Norfolk, in 1734 (FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5818344be93790eb7f5c7bbb/anna-ebden-samuel-blogg-marriage-norfolk-hethel-1734-02-24?locale=en)).

John GRIMSBY married Susan CROWFOOT by licence at Beccles, Suffolk, in 1747. Both were single and of that parish. Their elder children were christened there:
1749 John
1750 Sarah
1752 Deborah

A Thomas GRIMSBY was buried at Beccles in 1750 and Sarah GRIMSBY (daughter of John & Susan) in 1751.

Other children of John & Susan GRIMSBY were baptized at Laxfield [where many were buried]:
1754 Susan [d. 1788: daughter of widow Susan née CROWFOOT]
1756 Joseph [d. 1756]
1757 Mary
1758 Elizabeth [d. 1759]
1759 William Crowfoot
1760 Martha [d. 1763]
1761 Dorothy Reynolds [d. 1763]
1763 Ann Syre [d. 1763]
1764 Sarah (GRIMSBEY)
1765 Christian (daughter)

Also buried at Laxfield:
1770 John GRIMSBY
1789 William Crowfoot GRIMSBY son of William Crowfoot GRIMSBY & Mary Eleanor née SUTTON
1792 Sarah daughter of William Crowfoot GRIMSBY & Mary née SUTTON
1796 Susan widow of John GRIMSBY née CROWFOOT aged 70

And at Needham Market (Independent / Congregational Chapel):
1820 grocer & draper William Crowfoot GRIMSBEY of Stowmarket (Deacon of this church)
1833 Mary E. widow of William Crowfoot GRIMSBY of Stowmarket

William's will was proved in 1823 in the PCC (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D174048).
